Big 5 East Games involving 1A teams - 9-30-16

East Virginia Friday Night Lights

1) Essex takes on 3A powerhouse James Monroe (ranked in 3A top 4). JM is from the city of Fredericksburg and has been to 3A State Championship many times. Essex while maybe down a tad from past, still a major power in 1A ball...overlook them at your peril.

2) Northumberland (4-0) takes on D2 Private school recent power Trinity Episcopal. Trinity, a private school in Richmond, is the 2 time defending D2 state champs. I am pretty sure this will be their 1st meeting. If Northumberland wins or maybe even keeps it close, the Indians move into the top 10!

3) Surry at #9 Franklin (big Tri-Rivers showdown)

4) #8 Central-Lunenburg at 2A Nottoway

5) West Point at Lancaster (big game for both clubs, Tidewater v NND)

Hate to say it, but Northumberland will get blown out
Essex will get blown out.

As a NND fan and longtime follower, i hope for better results, and i'm gonna be pulling for them. But it just seems like there is no way.

Riverheads vs Buffalo Gap is a battle of two unbeaten teams. The Gap is 2A, while
Riverheads is 1A. Being from SWVA, I know little about either team, except I do
Know Riverheads is a traditional power in A1. Buffalo Gap is probably a good team
Also, and the game is at BG. Going against a unbeaten 2A is probably nuts, but the
Opposition is Riverheads, so I picked Riverheads. The game should be a good one.

That will be a great game. I'm really interested in the RR v. PH game. I wouldn't be shocked if PH went down in this one. Rural Retreat is no cupcake.

Coach, RR has surprised this season with another good team. They quickly adapted
To their new Coach, and did not miss a beat. RR is probably running that veer offense,
Which they run to perfection.
Patrick Henry has a real good team, espically with the Humprery kid at RB. Humphrey
Is fast, and strong, and can score on just about any play.
I would say this is PH'S toughest test of the season, and the team that make the fewest
Mistakes will win.

Chilwar really? They gave up 69 points to Tazewell. I will agree with you on the fact that they run the veer pretty darn good.

On paper it appears that Trinity Episcopal should win with ease over NHS as they have about 4-5 or more D1 prospects. However, the game remains to be played and upsets do happen on occasion for the little guy.

The main Trinity player to control is #20 for Patrick Way (QB, SB) who is 6'1 and runs a 4.58 40. Way is a recent transfer from 6A sports power Cosby High School. He must be contained on the outside (a weak spot that I'm sure Trinity has on seen on film). Also, NHS secondary must be placed in the proper positions or their great WRs will have a field day with Way. NHS has size and a solid, strong LB core.

On Northumberland offense, I'm sure that the center/QB exchange problems have been corrected. I am not a fan of the three QB rotational system that is often tried these days. It may work if you surprise an opponent with it on occasion, but not as a system of continuity.

Focus on one QB and perfect the system. NHS has the skill players to do it. Palmer as QB. Rotate Ball, Lee, Bunn, and Drake as the running backs. As for the Indian receivers - Smith, Headly, Johnson, and Thornton have the speed, size, and hands to win matchups and confuse the D. Mix em up, run some slants as well as the deep ball etc. Play with high intensity as mentioned before. It can be done.

Go Northumberland and Essex. Good luck to all 1A sports teams!

Hey EssexTrojan1, Where in this big world have you been, My Friend. Are those
Trojans ready for the big game with James Monroe? I expect an Essex win, and
Tell "Big Nasty" I will be looking at all the highlights on Hudl.

Best of luck, My Friend !!!

Not sure how many games will be played in these parts tomorrow night. Heavy rains last night and today and more expected tomorrow. Essex and JM has already been moved to Monday and KW and Caroline has as well. I'm sure more will follow.

Thanks kwsh, I have not been keeping up with the weather in the East, but apparently
The rain has been more there than out here in the West. When ever you guys get on
The field, play well and keep free from injuries.

The Giles at Galax should be a great game. Surprised that we haven't heard a
Word about the game. Everyone must be mad because Dixon did not get his
Artifical turf he wants at Galax. Is spending a million dollars on turf in hard times
The best thing to do in hard times?

How's it going Chiwar25? I'm always on preps daily. :) I've been sitting back reading everyone's post. Being that my young men had a bye week last week, I didn't have anything to post about. As for our game vs. James Monroe, as we all know, it's going to be a hard one for us to come out on top. Out of the 5 non district games we play, this is the one game during preseason that I picked as a loss. Not that Essex is going to just lay down and not try to upset JM, just because of JM being JM and Essex need to fill some major holes on offense due to graduation. Kwhs95fan and I were texting after the Goochland game and it came up that at the worst, Essex might end up 2-3 or even 1-4 at the end of out non district schedule. In the 3 games we got beat, 2 of the 3 we were still in them. Goochland game, it was only 7-0 Goochland with under 2 min remaining and Essex in Goochlands red zone but a pick 6 took place. 4A King George we were in it with the score being 7-0 KG with under 5 min remains. That game we had 9 turnovers. If we were able to make some plays on offense in those 2 games, we could of very well be 3-1 right now. That 5A Deep Run game was just a sloppy game all around for us against a much improved DR team. I'm still saying we will make a solid run in district play and playoffs. Not sure how far in the playoffs until I see if the men can get that offense going.

Man, if there was ever a field that needs resurfaced though. HAHA! They keep winning, and that money will find a way to them. It generally does...or it will even if you aren't winning (Tazewell)

Maybe you should go back through the threads and you will see a post on the the Giles at Galax game. Don't start bashing Dixon because he wants a descent surface to play on, from my understanding the money is already there for the new field and they are going to start on it after the season.

Mt Fan, I knew that would get someone's attention......no knocks on the best Coach
In SWVA, I hope him and the Tide the best. I hope you guys get the facilities you need,
But from what I understood there was some controversy about spending that much
Money. I probably was wrong....sorry about that.....I did not mean any harm to the Coach
Or Tide.
But if you guys did comment on the Giles games, I did not see it...sorry I will look for
It now.Best of luck against Giles.

Mt Fan, I apologize for missing your post. I found it. It should be a great game.
I was just reading some post on another site about the field In Galax, and it do not
Appear that the field was going to get funded in that fourm. That is where I got
My info.

According to what they said at the beginning of the season the money was there and they would start on it after the season. But I have also been told that their was a issue about where the drainage system would drain and it would cost an additional 300. I was told that issue had been resolved and the money was there for it but Galax is a typical small town and you can't believe everything you hear. Guess we will see in a few months whether or not the drainage issues have been resolved and if the money is really there. Regardless something needs to be done about the playing surface.

So they'll cancel soccer season in Galax? I know many happy players and coaches if that were to occur. they are potent!
