Alec Bettinger has led C.D. Hylton as the team’s ace in 2012. The University of Virginia signee has taken the hill against the Bulldogs’ toughest opponents. Now, with a dominating complete game performance against Nansemond River Tuesday, he has his team poised and sitting two games away from a state championship.

But after a campaign as strong as anyone could have anticipated, he’s still only a third team postseason selection at pitcher in his own district. The lack of recognition continues to spur him on as Hylton advances to the state semifinals on Friday after dispatching the Warriors 2-0 in front of a capacity crowd in Woodbridge.

“I’m glad he [Bettinger] was able to do this on this stage out here,” said Hylton head coach Craig Flesher. “He’s a third team Cardinal District pitcher, and we kind of used that as a motivating tool throughout the week.”

Bettinger, who managed a complete game with a meager 82 pitches, helped his own cause, driving in Joe King for the game-winning RBI on a fifth inning flare down the right field line.
