I am fortunate and proud to have three former members of the Dinwiddie Generals football team working for my company. As anyone that knows Coach Billy Mills understands, these kids leave their school years with the right characteristics to be successful in life. They show up to work on time and ready to go. They don’t back down from any challenge. They are disciplined and principled. And, perhaps the most important attribute that they have is that they are ”coachable”. These guys are tough mentally and physically, and eager to learn. When I hire new “electrical apprentice“, I could care less if the know a lug nut from a wire nut. I just need them to have characteristics like I’ve listed above. I can teach them the rest.

I used to say that I was not hiring another kid that either didn’t grow up on a working farm, or was the child of parents that ran a store or a restaurant. I’ve added, “or is a former member of a Billy Mills coached team.

Some of you may recall that a few years ago I took exception to the direction the Administration was taking our school system. And, I was disturbed by the comments on social media by members of our school faculty that wrongly associated our local law enforcement with the behavior that led to the atrocities that had occurred across our nation. This I found very unacceptable, in light of the fact that our school system and many of the after school activities were extensively supported by members of local law enforcement. Insinuating that all law enforcement was guilty of similar atrocities as have occurred, without supporting members of local law enforcement that were above this type of behavior was just wrong. I could not continue my support.

Though I’m not ready to once again throw my support behind the Dinwiddie School System, I have seen changes that I believe are good for the schools, and more importantly, good for the kids. After all, isn’t that the goal? Do what is best for the kids?

I may have my differences with the School System, but it does not change the fact that Coach Mills gives his kids every opportunity to be prepared to enter the adult working world. For this, I am appreciative.
