It would be razor think with the favorites winning out. The margin would be very slim

Salem would be #1, Champe and Jefferson Forest would tie for #2 unless Spring Mill defeats James Wood.

Here is why...

So, if I'm a John Champe fan I'm rooting like crazy for Spring Mills vs. James Wood. Area desperately needs a 4A+ division. Salem, Amherst, JF, Byrd, Fleming, PC, GW-D, FC, PH, Glass. That's a 9 game division you get 1 rinky dink cupcake if you want and everyone won't be struggling on points with these forced matchups against 3A schools for 60-70% of the schedule.

Just made a correction...Salem will get #1

Salem should be happy they didn't play that game against Carroll Co..
A game with Carroll Co who will probably finish 1-9 would leave Salem's power rating at 31.7 and definitely the #3 or #4 seed depending on Sherando's rating. Consider yourself's lucky for the 9 game schedule.

I'm sure the team and coaches would rather have played the game. Nobody here wants excuses and if they have to go on the road so be it.

Last thing I want, which I guarantee will happen in 2 weeks, is a bunch of jerks thinking there goes Salem scooting by with 9 when everyone else played 10. People love their conspiracy theories with this program and this will be yet another thing for them to harp on, as if where anyone plays in freaking high school actually creates an advantage.

Thanks Devils for the breakdown. I think if I had to do that my head would still be spinning. It seems like a lot of what ifs predictions. what would be the points differential if Amherst loses to Rustburg.

For JF they would drop to 32 because you are taking .2 away
For Salem they would drop to 32.3 so about .2 away
Amherst losing hurts both of those teams and helps John Champe but hurts JF more.

Thanks and for most of the predictions I took the teams with the better record and who was playing better competition. I also called a state football guru for some that are toss ups.

Thanks again. I wasn't sure how it would effect it with Amherst/Rustburg game. I was thinking JF would get more points since they played both of them and Salem only played Amherst. Like I said my head would still be spinning. So basically as a Salem fan I need to cheer on Amherst and James Wood!

I think William Fleming will beat Alleghany. That would give JF 2 more points and bump them up to 32.4. They would still be behind Salem in this scenario. Thanks for the hard work.

I knew not playing CC would help Salem in the points.

I didn't even look at the fact JF played both. If Amherst lost to Rustburg it wouldn't impact JF at all they would get the .2 points anyways it would just shift from Amherst to Rustburg. However it would hurt Salem. Thanks for clearing that up. It was late and I totally missed that point.

Salem is definitely not solid for #1. If Fleming beats Alleghany as I think they probably will and Rustburg beats Amherst which is very possible then JF would be the #1 seed with 32.6 over 32.556. I have thought JF would be the 1 seed as long as they go undefeated because their OOD schedule is better and the Seminole is tougher top to bottom than the RRD. It's actually closer than I thought it would be. I'll be cheering for Alleghany against WF & Amherst for the next 2 weeks.

JF will get .2 points for the Amherst-Rustburg game regardless because they beat both teams already, it just switches the line 2 points fall on. You lose 2 for a Amherst win but gain 2 for a Rustburg win because JF beat them both. So again if Fleming beats Alleghany they still only move up to 32.4...So Salem is the #1 seed still.

Sorry you are correct JF would stay at 32.4 with Fleming over Alleghany & Rustburg over Amherst. What would change is if Rustburg tops Amherst Salem would go from 32.5556 to 32.333 dropping to #2 or #3.

So a couple of things would need to happen for JF or Champe to outpoint Salem for the #1 seed if they all win out:
1. JF would need for Rustburg to beat Amherst taking 2 points away from Salem making them have 291 points and a 32.3 rating and JF would keep their 32.2 rating
2. Fleming would have to beat Alleghany bumping JF up to 32.4

John Champe:
Still needs Spring Mills to beat James Wood to get to 32.4 to even tie to get a chance at the #1 seed.

I agree with you that Im sure the team would have rather played the game. Im sure I missed it along the way but what was the definitive reason why both teams didnt play?

Because CC refused to make the game up. Salem offered at least 2 definitive days to play and CC refused both. Salem later essentially opened their schedule to CC to make it up at any time they wanted and CC still refused.

With where CC is as a program and with a brand new HC one could probably reason that they saw a chance to not play a team that would probably beat them by 60 and took it although that's speculation on my part and not part of any statement held by anyone at CC or Salem.

Salem actually is benefiting from not playing carrol co. The vhsl should have stepped in and mandated the game be played but they have no guts.

Correct....Salem should end with 293 points add in the 22 from Carroll Co and the 2 points for their 1 win and that means Salem would have 317 points or 31.7 average...Not in contention for the #1 seed.

While I have no big beefs with who you project to win a lot of those games, many of them are not foregone conclusions, so while this is fun, I will just wait for the games to be played. There will be upsets that you won't expect popping up in various places.

Someone asked I took a shot at it. There is no forgone conclusion all three o these teams finish 10-0. I honestly didn't care about the West since we are in the East and someone asked so no one stepped up so I took a shot at it. Looks like it will be an interesting playoff in the West. No one will officially know until 12:00 pm November 8th who they are playing when the VHSL releases the matchups and the final power ratings for the season.

I wasn't intentionally criticizing, I just know everything will not go chalk. It certainly is fun to look at these things and do what ifs.

I didn't take it that way at all. You're fine...Speculation is good in this instance to see who you "might" play

Salem actually is benefiting from not playing carrol co. The vhsl should have stepped in and mandated the game be played but they have no guts.
Criticize Carroll County not Salem---it was their home game. From the outside it looks like they were trying to avoid getting their football team embarrassed----Comparable scores are deceiving but I am sure they looked at that 77-7 half time score Salem put on Hidden Valley and since Carroll lost to Hidden Valley they were concerned. I wish someone from Carroll would come forward and explain but not too many fans from Carroll County

CC gave home field to Salem because of the turf. Then Salem said civic center said they were using the area for emergency area for the weekend. Salem did not want to move game to Monday because they had a Thursday game because of the VT Friday night game. Blacksburg offered to play on the Saturday after VT game but Salem refused due to having to move so much. The points hurt others as well. VHSL should make something in place just in these cases. Not fair for teams that played all 10.

Lot of untruths in there, my friend. I have detailed all this before, but here's what actually transpired:

Salem suggested playing on Thursday, Oct. 1, when most teams played that week. Carroll Co. refused, saying they wanted to play the JV game that night instead.
Carroll said they would play on Friday, but in Salem. After that was set up, the City of Salem officials said they would rather that not happen, as the Salem Civic Center serves as emergency shelter in times of natural disaster (more flooding was forecast). Further, the police and fire departments were apprehensive about staffing police and EMT's at a game, when they could be needed elsewhere. So Friday the 2nd and Saturday the 3rd were both out.

Salem did indeed offer to play on Monday, Oct. 5, despite having the Blacksburg game scheduled for the 8th. Blacksburg never made any offer to move the game to Saturday; hence, Salem never refused any such offer. Coach Magenbauer emailed Carroll's coach Sloss on Sunday the 4th, figuring the two coaches could work it out. Sloss's response was, "Nah, I'll stick with what my administration wants."

After that, Salem offered Monday the 12th to Carroll, which was also refused.
Coach Magenbauer was pretty pissed at the whole situation, as he was adamant about getting the game in. The sports reporter for the Salem Times-Register asked Magenbauer point blank if Carroll was bailing on the Salem game because of that 77-7 halftime score with Hidden Valley the week before. Paraphrasing slightly, Magenbauer's response was "I don't know. I can't put words in their mouth, but they're definitely not looking for a chance to play us. "

All of this was in the October 8 edition of the Salem Times-Register. Further, I got emails from the papers sports reporter, telling me what was going on. So, you can take all this to the bank.

The fact that this game went unplayed is ENTIRELY on Carroll Co. Their admin and coaches were very unhappy about being put in the River Ridge District to begin with, and this is not the first sporting event with Salem that they've cancelled for essentially no reason.

I don't have the answers to many things, but I do know what I'm talking about here. So I ask you to stop and think before you come on here and just make things up.

I definitely think the game should have been played. Wherever Salem ends up being seeded, it will be higher than it would have been had the Carroll Co. game been played. Which means that a team or two behind Salem is going to have worse seeds than they should, which will mean tougher matchups and loss of home games. I won't blame any coaches or administrators from those schools for being upset. But don't direct your complaints at Salem.

I guess it is possible that a team could not make the playoffs because they lost one point for Salem not playing the Cavs or lose one seed ! Either way , nobody predicted or planned this , it just happened, and like Devils pointed out , it is just luck , not a conspiracy . It may not even matter because who knows who will win head to head once playoffs start !

Now everyone needs to rethink the numbers. A recent thread stated that Carroll County will take the forfeit, giving Salem the win. This will drop Salem's points. It hurts their seed right now, but there are 2 weeks of football left, too much can happen.
