Doing some prep work for my preview this week, I uncovered that if Varina were to lose this Friday versus Hermitage who is 1-1, it would be the first 0-2 start for the Blue Devils since 1985! 39 years!

That's unreal! Since the Salem Spartans have a huge game against William Fleming this weekend. I don't think they are going to lose, but if they do it will be the first time they have lost two of their first three games since 2002. That is also incredible. Kudos to these teams who have maintained such a fantastic winning tradition. Good stuff @CRF4Dan .
We take for granted the success of programs or even just the consistency.
I have no idea how this game will go. Athlete for athlete I think it's about even but I think Varina might have a slight edge in the trenches. Earl Winston and Andre Clark for Hermitage might be the difference in this one. Herm will call whatever crazy play to get their guys the ball at any time while we know Varina currently is pretty bland on offense.
Varina’s has the edge in the trenches but Herm’s offense is more efficient. Varina is without their best pass rusher in Darius Wilson and their defense struggled with that mobile QB from Indian River. Herm is able to match Varina, athlete for athlete. I think without Darius on the edge, Earl Winston and Ben Yeanay will have big games running the ball.
The match up everyone should check out is 4 star (I believe he’ll get his 5th this summer) Andre Clarke vs 4 star DaMari “D1” Carter. I think the two are hands down the two of the top 3 players in Henrico County (Brennan Johnson from HS is in the top 3). If Varina doesn’t want to be 0-2, they have to get D1 the ball at minimum 15 times. End arounds, deep balls, snaps from the wildcat, line him up at RB. Herm does a very good job of giving their playmakers touches, Varina is total opposite. I picked Herm because they’re the better coached team.
I like this rivalry. It’s not like Varina/HS where a lot of the kids live right across the street from one another, play little league together and go to middle school together. Two totally different schools, opposite ends of the county separated by downtown Richmond. Varina despises Hermitage and Herm despises Varina. I appreciate both teams for exhibiting excellent sportsmanship considering the circumstances. Very old school kind of rivalry
I don't even see rain anywhere in the forecast till about Sunday. I did see Varina Athletics updated the time on Twitter, I'll be there for sure... you can count on it. I haven't seen either team this season yet so anxious to get a look at both.
Me too Danny. It’s going to be interesting to see how Varina handled that week off. Supposedly had 10+ kids out with Covid. I expect it to be low scoring.
I heard the same thing. In my preview for the week I have Varina 17, Herm 16
100%. I think Herm can win 5C. Young but athletes everywhere. Their line is a big concern to me. It showed against Smith.
Wow. That team I saw play Smith first game wasn’t a contender at all. Shocked you’re saying this. Guess Smith really is a 6A favorite
Yeah Smith dominated them in the trenches. Herm was poorly prepared and looked like a rec league team at times. Tried to do the same things they did against Smith last year and it just didn’t work. They have some guys when they’re coached up, but their line play is a huge question mark. Herm plays Varina close every year and I don’t expect anything different this year. Herm had plenty of chances to beat them last year…7-6 final, Varina’s way. Herm’s collection of skill guys is just as good as anyone in 5C but I think their line play will hold them back from reaching their full potential. They lost their whole offensive line from last year. Not a contender but certainly can beat Bird, Matoaca or Fleming.

@BoKnowsSports is the ugliness a result of Varina's predictability on offense or Hermitage defense. This Varina team has the athletes to be successful, but appear to be easily defended. Just curious on your take.
Varina is just horribly coached. Their offense is elementary but they have some really nice looking backs. Herm’s D is stout and Varina only scored on a broken play and a very nice looking deep TD throw. Varina’s D is fast and physical. Herm is so damn unorthodox on offense. They’ve had some opportunities but they’ve gotten in their own way. Varina has done an excellent job of taking Andre Clarke out of the game. He hasn’t done anything tonight as of 8:46 left in the game.
Varina’s backfield is tough. Between Wyche, Tre Rogers and Breon Bonner, they’re definitely more explosive than last year.

My take:
Both teams have some very good athletes. @BleedingNavy Varina is ultra talented but their playcalling will handicap them. If they’re not scrambling, they don’t have an offense. Wyche is a stud and takes that ugly/bland offense to “decent”. Herm had a good gameplan but horrible execution. Andre Clarke did nothing tonight and you gotta think if he gets the ball that they’re better than 10 points. In all, it’s what I expected. Low scoring, ugly.
