OK, I'm in GA and not sure if there are different rules for HS football but this has happened twice in the past 2 years in our games. Scenario is.....3rd down and lets say 10 to go. Quarterback is rushed and throws it away and intentional grounding is called. On both occasions, the official states intentional grounding, xxx penalty and loss of down, ball goes over to the defense. In one situation there was about 30 seconds left and in the other situation, it was overtime and we were down 6 and ruled the last play of the game. Nonetheless it was 3rd down both times. Obviously they interpreted loss of down to be the next down, not the one just played.....

First, we play by the same rules.

Second, loss of down means "loss of right to replay the down."

As I'm sure every reader of this board knows, a LOD penalty on 3rd down means it's 4th down. If the events happened the way you indicate, the head coach needs to file a report with the local association or the state.
