One of the icons Mac McClung could soon overtake in the Virginia High School League record book is an admirer of Gate City’s high-flying phenom.
Allen Iverson is well aware of what the 6-foot-2 Georgetown University signee has been doing in gyms across Southwest Virginia this winter and that the state’s single-season scoring record he’s held for 25 years is in jeopardy.
“Allen has seen video of the kid and most recently reached out to him to congratulate him on his achievements and his acceptance to his beloved Georgetown University,” Gary Moore, Iverson’s longtime manager, wrote Thursday in an e-mail to the Bristol Herald Courier. “He has taken a very special interest in this young man and for his future.”
The man known as “The Answer,” extended an invitation for McClung to compete in the Allen Iverson Roundball Classic, a prep all-star game scheduled for April in the Hampton Roads area. Current Duke University standout Gary Trent Jr. was among the standouts in last year’s inaugural event
Iverson scored 948 points as a junior at Bethel High School in 1993 and helped the Bruins win the VHSL Group AAA championship with a 77-71 win over John Marshall in the state finals at University Hall in Charlottesville. The fearless 6-foot guard was an All-American at Georgetown and became an 11-time NBA All-Star.
He probably saw the clip of McClung executing a sublime between-the-legs jam on Tuesday in a win over Ridgeview. Fox Sports 1 and ESPN both aired highlights of McClung’s aerial exploits afterward as the dunk went viral like most of the slams the senior point guard has thrown down.
McClung has scored 839 points in 22 games for Gate City, which closed out the regular season with a 91-46 drubbing of Daniel Boone on Wednesday night. His career point total now stands at 2,487
