I know Haysi is a small community, but this is the first time I've seen a game scheduled at an elementary school. Sandlick Elementary school looks to be fairly new and wondering if they decided to add the field there pending future growth. Appears to be a nice facility. There's no disrespect here for those who might try to take it there.

It's at the Elementary School because there is not room at the high school campus. That happens in the mountains. You come down one side of a mountain to a stream, cross the stream and go back up the other side. And it's there pending future growth, because Haysi is closing as the end of the year and combining with Clintwood to form a consolidated school. The field is rough but the people are nice.

Go to Goggle Earth and look at Haysi and the surrounding area. Good lord, I guess they do have good athletes. You have to be one tough Hombre to live in that area. And not just Haysi, most of Southwest Virginia, is a really rugged area. My hat's off to those hardy folks. That could teach us flat landers a thing or two about what tough is all about.

Good luck Tigers.

Signs hanging in the trees : better turn around why you still can, one road in one road out. LOL!!!!

As someone with ties to the Altavista program, I was hoping (if the seedings played out right), that we would have the opportunity to play Haysi again. Preferably hosting at AHS, but if we had to go back to Haysi that would have been fine. We had heard horror stories about the place, but nothing could have been further from the truth. Fans were loud and proud, nothing derogatory to AHS players. Extremely hospitable to all of the AHS fans that made the trip. Class act as far as we're concerned. A lot of football to be played, but maybe we'll meet in Salem!!

Haven't heard people say anything much about Haysi other than their field gets in pretty bad shape and that it's not a fun drive in there. Were rumors last year that they watered their field but I think that was put to rest last year. The field sets between two mountains and doesn't get a lot of sun this time of year and it does get pretty rough.

I agree with hokieheelzfan....very good environment, and excellent fan support at Haysi. I too am a Altavista fan and the folks at Haysi were very loud and support their team very well and they are very hospitable.

I've lived in haysi all of my life and ill be the first to tell you it's steep nasty mountains and that's it. The high school grounds were carved out of a hillside which is why the field Is at the elementary school. Haysi and clintwood high schools will both be shutting the doors at the end of the school year (the other high school in the county ervinton shut down at the 2012/13 school year). The new school which is close to being completed will be ridgeview high school (which I'm not a fan of the name). Sandlick elementary will be shutting down in the next few years to build a new elementary school close to the current haysi high school. We are a small town and community last I checked the high school was around 265 kids best I recall, but we are a tight knit and proud community and always have great turnouts to support our team. I know a lot of us schools from the coalfields get accused of a lot of things but I assure you they aren't true. We treat the teams we host with respect (even though like every school we have a few idiots in the stands that are just rude to everyone). After all we are all there for one thing and that is to play football. I'm new to the forum and figured this would be as good of a thread to jump in on as any.

Welcome to the board. All have a few idiots that get out of control, but got to love the game anyway.

I think it would be nice if schools could break the normal tradition of playing the same teams each year and add teams like Haysi. I understand there are contracts agreements between the two schools and travel restrictions, but I think it would good to see one or two different teams each year. Maybe schedule some games on Saturday to ease the strain of travel for the team as well as the fans. Played Gretna for a couple of years, (still have a grudge) thought it was good competition with great fan support .
