Top 1st

James River leaves the bases loaded after a HBP, double (by Roberts), and a walk. Nathan Kirby grounded out at that point to end the threat. No score going to the bottom of the first.

Bot 2nd

Bad call at third kept the bases loaded and none out (instead of first and second with one out), and Boothe's sac fly scored Moynihan. Roberts got out of it from there with two strikeouts, but Kellam has a 1-0 lead after two innings.

Top 3rd

Bushby got hit by a pitch for the second time today, but an otherwise uneventful third inning. Kellam 1, James River 0, going to the bottom of the third.

Top 4th

Another 1-2-3 for Roberts. He has six strikeouts and has allowed just one hit (and infield single to Moynihan) through four. Going to the fifth, Kellam leads 1-0.

Top 5th

Harry Lee Watson hit a two-run homer to put JR up 2-1. Cullen Large had doubled earlier in the inning.

Bot 5th

Sinnen got a single, only the second Kellam hit, but Roberts dispatches Kellam from there. Rapids lead 2-1 going to the sixth. Roberts has eight strikeouts through five innings of work.

Top 6th

1-2-3 inning capped by a terrific play by Morrison at second on a groundout. James River 2, Kellam 1, going to the bottom of the sixth.

Bot 6th (part one)

Bad inning for JR. A lot happened. Read my recap for all the details, but suffice it to say that a couple of walks, a wild pitch, a passed ball, and an error allowed Kellam to score twice and take a 3-2 lead. Knights are three outs away. Carrico relieved Roberts with one out, but was unable to retire any batters. Trey Rose came in with runners on second and third with one out. Another error scored two. Kellam leads 6-2, all five runs this inning are unearned.

FINAL

Kellam wins 8-4 after bad inning destroys James River. Nice rally at the end by JR. Knights are 26-2 going into final tomorrow against Lake Braddock.

Re: FINAL

Rogers from Lake Braddock vs. Moynihan from Kellam. Rodgers is junior already committed to the University of Georgia. Any information on the Kellam team and Moynihan? Braddock is the best representative from the Northern Region and Rogers is tough.

Re: FINAL

Moynihan was the Eastern Region Player of the Year as a junior and he is 9-0 this year. He is headed to ODU.

Can't believe at this stage there is no series play. 1 bad inning can lose the championship! Quarter and semi finals should always be best of 3.

Too many games. The state rounds alone would take up to nine games and maybe two full weeks to play. If you also made regionals 2-of-3, then you're talking about as many as 18-21 playoff games, total. That's probably never going to happen in a state that caps the regular season at 20 games.

Of course, the VHSL seems to have prioritized state playoffs over the regular season as it is, so maybe it's not that far-fetched.

I don't mind a single-elimination format, so long as the games are spaced far enough apart that you can always throw a #1 or #2 starter (barring injury).

The threat of bad weather would make a best of three State series very difficult. The Eastern Region barely made it thru the single elimination tournament this year because of weather.

Good point

And the Northern Region didn't manage to get its regional title game played until the Saturday night before the state playoffs. In a best-of-three, one region where a team sweeps might be wrapped up literally a week before another region that has bad weather and the series goes the distance. All it would really take would be 2-3 days of storms.

Even at the state round, one bad week of weather might mean pushing the final game of the season (depending on the results) close to July.
