Jefferson Forest preview

Finally have a few minutes to catch up on the forum. Reading the article, I had to smile at the player's comment about bringing the same intensity to the scrimmage as the past postseason. Coaches Mags and Christmas run a tight ship, so I would be shocked if things got out of hand. But you know the Cavaliers are going to have a chip on their shoulder. Wouldn't you?

The article didn't offer much as to how they are planning to fill the voids left by the departing seniors. But, I guess truthfully, that's a real work in progress.

I don't believe anyone thinks that JF will repeat the success of last season. Or even 2014. But with Coach Christmas at the helm, anything is possible.

I don't think any preview will satisfy our hunger for information. That being said, in my experience there is no better, more thorough, or knowledgeable writer in coverage of SWVA HS sports than Robert Anderson of the Roanoke Times. His expertise is not limited to SWVA, but is his focus as a native of Martinsville. I had the pleasure of meeting him last year and talked with him at length about our favorite subject. As good of a writer and reporter he is, he's even that much better of a person. Meeting with him and talking with him was one of the things that I will always remember and treasure.

I met Matthew Hatfield last year at the championship game and in just a short time I was struck similarly by him. A very nice and knowledgeable gentleman.

I've been fortunate to meet so many wonderful people over the years through football, especially in the last 8 years or so because of this site.

The real run-downs for the Timesland teams will be the capsules on each in the RT's high school football preview. Unfortunately, we have to wait until August 25th for that to come out!

Mike, I agree with everything you said about Mr. Anderson. The high school community across the state is fortunate to have him to support of our passion. Unfortunately, (or actually, fortunately), I don't think he penned any of the previews.

Matt Hairfield is cut from the same mold. As good of a writer he is, he is a better person.

I don't think you, Mike, have met Danny Lewis yet? The same shoe fits him as well. Just a great person.

And I'm here to tell you that Rod Johnson is exactly the same type of person. A few on this forum has drawn hie ire. But "Rod the man", is as even tempered and fun to be with as anyone you could hope to meet. And his love for high school football in Virginia is unsurpassed.

Keeping with this theme, Dinwiddie gets very little respect from the Richmond Times Dispatch. And when they do, it's begrudgingly. But the truth is, the RTD writers that cover the high school landscape in Central Virginia do a really good job. Are they on par with Robert Anderson? No. But very few are. So in spite of frequently being treated as an unwanted step child here in Dinwiddie, they deserve me giving them credit for doing a good job overall.

I'm so use to RT HS sports stories to be written by Robert Anderson I forgot this story actually originally came from Lynchburg's N&A. My bad

Great the RT does this. The Free Lance Star does the same thing in the burg with a full page write up on every team in the area. It's my Bible for every season.

I am on the other side because of Jefferson Forest coach. I think they will be very good again . Time will tell how good.

I think they will be the underdog in 4 games this year:
Magna Vista
Heritage
Amherst
Brookville

We've talked about this a couple of times on the board in the offseason. I said they'd likely go 6-4 and I'll stick with that. When I first postulated that most seemed to think that my win prediction was too high. My main reason for that prediction was because of Coach Christmas and the enthusiasm he's injected into the program. Despite the losses I thought Christmas would be able to coach them up to 6 wins. Fast forward a couple of months and now a lot of people are saying they won't drop off much because they've built a program. Now my win prediction is too low! I'm just going to stick with the 6 wins, that seems a good balance between the players they lost and the coach's ability to build a program. I think the program is well on its way, but this year might be a bit of a correction year. I'll know more in 2 weeks.

You could well be right here Mike. I think the JF offense will remain good but the losses are not going to allow them to put up as many points. Of course, that's an assumption but I believe it's a justifiable one. The problem is the defense. it just hasn't been there. They have some tough games on the schedule. 8 - 2 would be outstanding but I think your number is closer to the reality of it all.

I'll get to see them first hand 2 Friday's from tomorrow in the benefit. I know it's a scrimmage and both teams will be trying different players, but the first half should be mostly 1st string. I may adjust my prediction some based on what I see.

I'm going to stick with what I said a few months ago, too. Which was, even though Christmas has started elevating the program, with all the personnel they lost, JF is going to have to prove that they can reload, rather than having to rebuild. I think I also said six or seven wins, in less dominating fashion than last year, but probably one-and-done if they make the playoffs.

I know im the one that broke story a few months back about SRs RB Overstreet coming to JF. Well..i talked to a player that was a 1st string on JFs O last week (dont want to give names). He said JF was on hot pursuit for him and almost had him (recruiting, lol). He chose to stay with SR. I would love to see him in that wishbone O though. that kid is a monster to be a rising JR. go follow SRs twitter @FearTheWing. they put vids and weightlifting #s up. Overstreet is in top 3 in every category.

So it remains as if you said nothing at all. Some story.

i just wanna meet you face to face 1 time!!! can u please drop a address or a meeting point with a time and date?
I live in MD now, on the Eastern Shore, taking care of an elderly Father. I do occasionally get to take a Friday Night in VA but that's rare. Mostly because it's almost $30 an hour to have someone else qualified here so my Friday night excursions, even brief ones, are a 6 hour round trip that cost about $300. Thank goodness I don't have to pay admission at the gate. I post the when and where of any excursions. Would be very happy to meet you.

Dinner on me by the way. And I'm a major foodie so we won't be hitting Burger King.

I was in Clinton MD about a month ago. Stopped and got some blue crabs in Newburg at Captain Billy's right on the Potomac.

nah, save ya money, or feed a homeless man somewhere. there are plenty of things i can think of doing rather than breaking bread with a nitwit like you. i would only want to pray for ya if we did meet. you're nothing but an old man with computer balls.

I live right on the Chester River, just North of the Chestertown bridge. At this time of year, just drop the pot off the dock in the morning and dinner is there when you get home. But it's funny though, the old SOB is so spoiled from a food standpoint, he actually said "how many nights a week do we have to eat this crab crap"? And I'm a major foodie so it's different everyday and I have to admit it's damn good. But tonight it's filet mignon, potatoes and veg. And he'll still bitch the meat isn't tender. The man has earned so many chits in his life, I didn't think he could run out. But he's working hard at it.

Passed Captain Billy's many time. Never been there. I'm jealous.
