Re-match of the 11th Annual VirginiaPreps.com Basketball Classic at Oscar Smith, where John Marshall pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Landstown 69-55. Of course, the Justices went on to reach the Class 3 State Semis, where they fell in overtime to Phoebus. Landstown got spurred on from that defeat as they captured their first ever Class 6 state title, beating Lake Braddock for the title at VCU.

Two young pups to remember from last night's game - freshman Dennis Parker Jr. of John Marshall will be a national level recruit. Watched him a great deal in the Ben Moore Fall League at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton and he's very talented, well-rounded and does things with ease.

Another is Landstown sophomore guard Donald Hand Jr. Son of a former UVA standout in Donald Hand and step son of Eagles Coach Dwight Robinson, he plays really under control, can score it at all three levels and has a smooth stroke. Very calm performer under pressure and is only scratching surface of what he can become. Looks like a legit 6'4 right now as well.

I've been wrong before, but I don't see anyone being remotely close to JM in 2A. Three D1 recruits, one who is 6'10 and ranked #60 in the class of 2021. They just beat the 6A champs, they play the #7 ranked team in the country next weekend, they go to Georgia for a big tournament among playing their Richmond area schedule. They won't even play a 2A school until the postseason.

I tend to agree with you that John Marshall is a significant favorite in Class 2. There are some other quality teams that can contend - East Rockingham leaping to mind, Radford would've been right up there for me if Prioleau from football was healthy (they lost stars in Morton-Robertson and Jones to graduation, Radford U), Gate City has a lethal scorer in Bradley Dean... though they would've posed more of a challenge with guys like Mac McClung and Zac Ervin.

Ultimately, while it's going to take a team playing above its norm to beat the Justices, it also will require JM playing a below average game to get knocked out in the playoffs.

For those interested - we have John Marshall playing Oscar Smith in the nightcap of Session 2 of our 12th Annual VirginiaPreps.com Basketball Classic at Churchland High in Portsmouth on Sat. Jan. 25, 2020. Session 1 is on Sat. Jan. 11, 2020 at Green Run HS in Virginia Beach.

When they start playing 2A schools it will be a joke. They will win by whatever they want to. None of the schools you mentioned have the overall talent to even be competitive with Jayem. Everybody else is playing for 2nd. This coming from someone who's team has been known to pull an upset or two at the state level.

John Marshall has been beaten by far lesser talent before. The 2017 team was loaded with Lavar Allen, Damar McCrae, Greg Jones, and then #1 player in the class of 2020 Isaiah Todd, they got beat up bad by Northside in the semi’s that year. Won it in 2018 and lost again last year to Phoebus, WHOOOO *drum rolls*, lost to Northside in the title game. John Marshall has a good team this year, but so does East Rock, Gate City, Radford, Dan River and the giant slayers (who won’t be afraid of John Marshall), the Martinsville Bulldawgs! I love the disrespect those guys get. Lost to Dan River last night but out of my 25 years of life, Martinsville has always dropped a regular season game you scratch your head about.
