Just noticed this

In the 2A final four, only Buffalo Gap had ever made it to the championship game. It's all new to everyone else!
Technically that's not true of course! LOL!! Both PV and Appalachia won a number of state titles before becoming "United" as Union...But yes, as Union HS it was their first appearance...and I'll admit, I'm surprised that it took them as long as it did with the storied FB histories at both schools!

Today's Star article explains how the Clarke County teams in the early 60's had four undefeated seasons and another one-loss season. There were no playoffs then and Clarke had 300 students, but were playing schools with up to 2,000 and 3,000 kids. Safe travels to Salem!

A couple things to keep in mind...... PV High had more students back in "the day" than Union has now with both PV and Appy students.

Once Appy coach Tom Turner passed away, any ability for Appy to field a competitive team was lost. He did more with less than any coach I've ever seen. And the last 3 years of PV's existence can be explained by this....the cheerleaders practiced longer than the football team.

Both schools were just a shadow of their former selves and were in ruins when consolidation happened. Travis Turner really has done a MUCH better job than a lot give him credit for. With the state of both PV and APPY, it is almost like he was starting up an expansion team or something.

Now, if he could just find a DC, we'd be set!

Thanks for the info. I knew it would take some time for the new school to develop an identity and chemistry, like Ridgeview is doing now, but I didn't know why it has taken this long for them to challenge for a title. Powell Valley and Appy were dominant in the 1990s, and not just because of the Jones brothers.
