King and Queen vs Essex - Question

See these two teams meet during the regular season this year . Curious as being so close and many of students being related . When is the last time these two teams have met ?

Happy to see this matchup.

It is unusual that these teams have not met more frequently especially since the schools are about 25 miles apart in neighboring counties. They were once in the same district and played each of the four years K&Q was in the NND. Their last meeting was 1998 and Rip Worrell was the Royal Tigers' coach then.

Essex won 33-8 in 1998. Hard to believe it's been that long, when they're neighboring counties.

Thank you so much I knew you or kwhs95 would have this answer. I really appreciate the knowledge of you both

What’s your out look for this game ? I know it’s early but King and queen has been having some really good seasons as of late which is awesome. Great coaching and the players are bought in. Malik Holmes and berry in the backfield are amazing but does they have the supporting cast ?

Hard to say, with not having seen Essex play in nearly 2 years. I expect they will still have plenty of size and I expect Kam Robinson to be the feature runner for Essex. K&Q has the offensive firepower with Holmes at qb, Stanley and Speight at WR, and Berry and freshman Jadyn Nelson at RB. If you haven't seen Nelson yet, he's a special kid. He's about 5'9 185 and has a good combination of power and speed. He ran for over 700 yards in just 3 jv games this spring. The key for KQ will be upfront. They have to replace a couple of starters from last season and could potentially start 2 freshmen on the O line. As is the case almost every year at KQ, depth will be an issue. They only had about 16 kids dressed out for the regional championship and several who played were way less than 100 percent. I had heard that a few players who were starters 2 years ago, but didn't play this spring, were going to return this fall. Whether that happens or not, I don't know. But by the time these two play in week 5, everyone should have a good idea of how both teams are. But knowing Coach Dehart like I do, his only focus right now is on week 1 and Colonial Beach.

Agree. Hoping for another fantastic season for the Tigers. Thank you again for the knowledge. So full of information . Thank you

Why'd they stop playing?
Probably because they have been at two opposite ends of the spectrum talent wise since then. This will be an interesting game. I see KQ has added more "contender teams" to its schedule. They will definitely be tested this year. After having a year off, it will also be interesting to see how the teams that didn't play in the Spring fair and if some schools can even field a team.

I only know that Essex started a few promising frosh and a soph on defense in 2019. Not sure if they started all season, but they did play. Offensively, I don't think they have much back from 2019. As I recall they were mostly top heavy with seniors and juniors starting on offense. So, it will probably pretty much look like their 2019 JV team playing varsity this year. And IIRC they had a pretty good JV team that season.

Ironically one of those freshmen from 2019, Kam Robinson, who I think will be a stud this year, has ties to King and Queen. His dad Brad Robinson was a good running back for KQ back in the early to mid 2000s. His first cousins, Jayveon and Tre Robinson, are star players for King William, with Jayveon, being the Cavaliers quarterback and safety, and Tre, their all region lb. So the KW and Essex matchup, which is always a good one, will be even more interesting this year as well

I'm thinking that KW will be a beast for the Class 1 foes on their schedule. I'd be very surprised if they don't win Region 2A.

Isn't Essex considered a favorite to win 1A (not the entire division but Region A, Div 1)? If so, should be a dandy. When's last time a team from Region A won the state title in 1A or 2A?

They won the region from 2017-19 but really have no clue at this time what prospects they may have on this year's team. However, based on reputation I can see why many feel this way. Essex was the last Region A team(Group A, Class 1, Group 1A) to win a state title in 2009

KW has in my opinion, the best team they have had in about 10 years. I think they are a legit state title contender. They have size, speed, depth, and coaching. Having a Division 1 RB in Claiborne doesn't hurt either. If not for Covid, I think they would have been in the state mix this spring.

Gonna be tough for anyone in 1A to stop that damn Red Machine in Staunton. If Essex can win that side of the state (1A and 1B) they absolutely can win it all.

Gonna be same boat for KW as Essex. Gotta knock off the big bad bully dynasty in 2A to make a legit run. Graham managed to nab one in 2018 but avoided Appomattox due to Radford upset. Some good teams out East, but it's been a while since anyone brought home gold in football. Goochland was last time from the East to win IIRC back in 2012, hell they aren't even 2A anymore lol

Most definitely. Appomattox is definitely the team to beat and rightfully so. So much respect for Coach Smith and that program. Class acts on and off the field.

Ironically, KW opens with Goochland on August 27th. That should be a really good game and a test for KW right off the bat. They also are scrimmaging Lafayette, the week before.

I think this year favorites out of Region A will be Northumberland only loss 3 seniors and have arguably the best player in the state in Seldon

Really excited to see what King William does this year . Pull for them all the time except when playing the Tigers lol.

I think KQ has a lot returning and didn’t they beat Northumberland in the playoffs? Then West Point beat KQ for the title.
Regardless of last year, I would put my money on the talent pool in Essex until someone knocks them off.

KQ returns all but one of their top skill guys. They did lose a couple of 2 way linemen, but have some good freshmen coming up. West Point only lost about 5 seniors, with only a couple of them being starters.

Is W&L a dark horse? Thought they lost their coach?
I think W&L and Colonial Beach are two of the hardest teams to peg, since they haven't played in nearly 2 years. I do remember that CB had a good freshman RB, who should be a rising junior. CB opens against King and Queen, so that should give a little idea of how they could be. I know Essex hasn't played in awhile either, but Essex always seems to have tons of athletes and size. Region A should be pretty interesting this year, especially among the top 5 or 6 teams.
