King and Queen vs Northumberland

Thanks for the updates. Sounds like K&Q is on fire tonight. Good for them (not overconfident like W&L was last week).

That’s some good coaching right there (excellent preparation for Cam etc.).

Will be interested to see the details like how many turnovers etc. Sounds like things went south early for the Indians and they have just thrown in the towel. Hope that they will fight it out.

Strange season indeed.

Well done to the Tigers. Next week should be an interesting one.

44-12, late 3rd. From what I have been told, Northumberland can't stop KQ quarterback Malik Holmes and the run game

Malik Holmes gave the Indians fits last year too. However, the NHS offense always countered. Obviously, not this year and the Indian D was still too porous.

Congrats to K&Q on the win! Great job to their kids and coaches.

(Now we will all finally get to find out the outcome of that really close K&Q v Essex game that never had a conclusion...).

Other than the KW game and the 3OT game with CB, where CB had 12 at the end of regulation, the KQ defense has been pretty stout all year

Will the game be at Essex or neutral site ?

I would assume at Essex

(However, not sure anymore, some of the local NND and Region A sports rules and old school traditions have certainly changed since I was heavily involved the local sports scene - not too mention all the covid madness.)

Congrats again to K&Q...they deserve and earned the win.

(I am not trying to take anything away from them but I knew something was just not quite right - I mean NHS just whipped W&L in Montross who had just whipped Essex.)

No excuses - just letting people know what happened at King and Queen from the Indian perspective

I just received the details about the game from some Northumberland people. I really hope that these 3 boys are gonna be okay and that these injuries are definitely the main concern for NHS. I do not have any details on the specific injuries.

In the 1st Quarter, NHS lost BOTH it's two major offensive stars (and they both are main stars on Defense as well) who run the entire show.

Superstar Cam Seldon (scored three huge TDs last week v W&L) and the QB Denzel Palmer were lost to injury in the 1st Quarter and did not return.

The starting QB went down just in the 2nd series and then NHS' second string went down in the 2nd quarter with no real backup after that.

These injuries and loss of their skills and leadership just sucked the life right out of the team from the beginning. NHS did continue to try as best they could. King and Queen is just to good without the main stars and captains.

I hope that the boys are alright. Again, K&Q is a good team and may have won anyway. Good luck to them.

It's my understanding that the same thing happened last week in Montross. W&L's starting QB/DB (Randall Annino) went down shortly after W&L had taken a 7-0 lead on a 50 yard TD pass in the first quarter.

Interesting...hope that the young man is okay.

Did W&L losing their starting QB impact the flow and trajectory of the game?

Of course, absolutely.

Not only do you lose his vital skills and leadership on the field but it does significant psychological damage to the overall confidence and energy of the entire team.

Once that snowball starts rolling downhill, you can hear that fat lady starting to sing loudly even before halftime.

To not have your top 2 stars in the game (especially one like Cam and your QB) in a 50/50 contest, I can assure you it is already over 99% of the time.

Most regular sports fans have no idea how much the mental state of the team (especially it's stars whose play and attitudes usually determine the outcome of any battle among fairly equal opponents).

I am quite confident that you are aware of this as you worked alongside one of the smartest ADs and coaches (imo) ever from eastern Virginia. A master of the game within the game...

I have heard many people (including more than a few coaches) say that only in small schools like 1A and 2A does it make that much difference if you do not have your top star or two in the game. Those people are fools.

Here is an easy example that even a Forrest Gump could probably understand.

The NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Super Bowl last year entirely because they had Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. It's that simple.

Did coaching help? Certainly - is football a team sport with D and special teams etc.? Of course. However, you could have plugged in any good NFL players into those positions.

However, the only two players that the Bucs HAD to have were Brady and Gronkowski.

Of course, Brady knew it way before the season even began while the Gronk was on a beach somewhere sleeping off another hangover lol.

I was at the K&Q Northumberland game. I feel that they would win either way. The way KQ offense was running, it was just their night. Very seldom had a loss of yards. But the injuries definitely halted the progression.
