I have to give the utmost praise to both these teams tonight. Obviously KW was a better team than expected. I am not saying that the coaching staff overlooked them, but the media around here had painted a picture of a Gladiator win, perhaps even an easy one.
Instead the Cavaliers totally dominated the first half, especially with their defense. Riverheads could not get anything going, and I would be surprised if we had 80 yards of offense in the first half. Even a devoted fan such as myself did not see a comeback coming at all. They had just looked too dominant.
But on the Big Red's very first possession of the second half, Ben Agnor ripped off that brilliant 60 yard run and we knew we had a ball game. The Gladiators scored of course on that drive and then pushed across three more scores in the fourth quarter to set up the frantic finish. On all three of those drives, they had some crucial fourth-down conversions, which has almost become a Riverheads trademark.
As for the missed extra point, I am not sure exactly what happened. From my vantage point, it did not appear to be blocked. The snap and hold seemed OK but he just didn't get enough into it. The most agonizing part is that was his very first missed PAT of the year. He had missed two field goals in the overtime game with Luray, but then hit the game winner when he needed to, but this was literally his first missed PAT. But he is only a junior so hopefully he will be back next year and win some more for us.
So hats off to the Big Red for giving us such an inspired comeback that came oh so close to getting the job done. But KW also deserves praise for their second half play. When Riverheads charged back the first, second, third, and fourth times, the Cavs could have panicked anywhere along the line. All of us in the stands knew that we were just one turnover away from getting the big break we needed. Instead they kept their poise, did not commit any mistakes to speak of, and were also guilty of very few penalties. And as described above in the play by play, it was not necessarily their workhorse Peatross who did us in.....the really big plays of the night came from the big fullback, number 42.
Best wishes to the Cavaliers the rest of the way. And of course to the Gladiators, congrats on your fifth-ever perfect regular season. We will have enough returning talent next year, not to mention our always impressive JV team, to make another run at it. So let's sit back and watch the final eight battle it out and we will do it all again next year!
