As some folks have already touched upon, LB had a perfect game plan and it simply came down to Riverheads being completely unable to stop Nicely. He ran at will all night and when he was forced to throw, he went 4-4 including an amazing TD pass that tied the score just before halftime.
The Gladiators were leading 21-14 at that time, and had they been able to prevent that touchdown, and taken a one TD lead into the locker room, it might have been a different game. But instead that score put Big Mo squarely on the side of the Cavaliers and everyone in the stadium knew that the game would likely be decided on the first series of the second half.
If the Cavs took that in for a score and took their first lead of the game, they would likely go on to win, whereas if RHS could stop them, that would swing the momentum back to their side. The Cavs not only scored on that first series but they did so with a textbook drive that ate up almost nine minutes of the third quarter clock. They had to convert at least two fourth-down plays to keep the drive alive but they finally scored and soon after that, forced the first RHS turnover of the night, which led to the insurance touchdown.
Riverheads had some highlight reel plays as well but they were all in the first half. It only took 1:13 for them to take a 7-0 lead when CCC got to the corner and outraced the defense for a 64 yard score. But LB answered that with a score of their own as the teams went on to forge ties at 14-14 and 21-21.
CCC reinjured his shoulder late in the first quarter and had to sit out the rest of the game, so RHS fans will no doubt wonder if the outcome might have been different had he been able to play the entire game. But in all fairness to LB, the same thing happened to their star player down there last year, so they knew the feeling all too well.
David Austin filled in nicely for CCC and scored both of the other Big Red touchdowns but the REAL play of the night for Riverheads came midway through the second quarter when the score was tied at 14. The Gladiators had just been hit with a penalty and were backed up to their own 16 yard line.
QB Bennett Dunlap faded back to pass and looked as if he was about to be sacked, but instead he unloaded to a wide open Luke Bryant, who hauled in the pass around midfield. It was a foot race to the end zone and he appeared headed for paydirt when he put a beautiful spin move on the defender around the 20. He was still caught around the three, but Austin scored on the next play for what turned out to be the final Gladiator TD of the night.
The second half was then all Cavaliers as they pretty much beat Riverheads at its own game, utilizing a disciplined, ball control offense and getting the job done on defense. Nicely added the final nail in the coffin with the second of two LB interceptions to thwart any Riverheads comeback attempt.
So the streak ends as we all knew it would at some point and some folks in Bixby, Oklahoma might be as happy about that as anybody. The Gladiators will now re-focus and realize, as Coach Norcross said in the post-game interview, that their goals are the same (make it to the playoffs and win the state title) and more importantly, that those goals are still quite attainable.
At this stage, LB also looks like a contender for the Class 3 title, so we may have seen two state champs out there tonight. The highest compliment the teams received tonight may have come from WHSV Radio 550 out of Harrisonburg, as they ignored all the games featuring their own Rockingham County teams and elected to cover this one, in addition to our usual broadcast on Staunton's ESPN 1240.
The Gladiators are now off for 15 days until Tazewell brings its air show to Greenville on Saturday the 24th for a 1:00 kickoff.
