The Riverheads Lady Gladiators had a pleasant ride back home tonight from Altavista after taking out the Lady Colonels 25-19, 25-21, 25-15 to capture the Region B volleyball title. With the win, Riverheads will now get to host the Region A runner-up in a state quarter-final on Saturday. I have not seen a time for that and I believe the opponent will not be determined until Tuesday night when Rappahannock hosts Lancaster in that regional final.

I cannot give you any particular details about tonight's match due to frequent computer freeze ups, but the scores tell us that RHS was pretty consistent throughout the match. From what I could tell, Altavista only held the lead here and there in the first two sets, but in the deciding set, I am pretty sure that RHS led wire to wire.

Sources are now saying that Riverheads will host Lancaster, the Region A runner-up, on Friday at 6:00. So while other folks are out in the cold watching football, RHS fans can be inside cheering on the Lady Gladiators.

Congratulations to Riverheads.

I hope to be able to see them play soon (assuming that they win over Lancaster) in the state semis if the Lady Raiders of Rappahannock are able to defeat a strong Altavista this Saturday at 2 pm. Should be a tough one in Warsaw.

Rappahannock won the Region A Championship last night over a good Lancaster squad.

The Lady Raiders finished the season with a fine 24-3 record.

The Rappahannock girls went 63-0 (in sets) v the 1A teams they played this season. Their three losses were to a Class 6 team, a Class 5, and a Class 4 school. Two of those games went to the final set during a big tournament held at King George High School.

Whoever survives the Region A v B battles most likely will face powerhouse Auburn who I think is 26-0 on the season (including wins over many larger schools).

That State Championship game will be like a home game for Auburn as it is in Salem.....

No Northern Neck District team (6 schools) has ever won a Volleyball State Title.

Riverheads has lost the last three state finals to powerhouse teams from down that way. The first was to Patrick Henry Glade Spring on a neutral court in Roanoke. Great atmosphere that night. Then they lost to Auburn in Salem which as you said was pretty much a home court for them. Last year in the abbreviated season, they played Auburn for the state title directly ON Auburn's home floor. If the Gladiators do survive the A/B half of the board, it appears that facing Auburn again in Salem would be their fate.

It occurred to me that I might be wrong about last year's game being played at Auburn. It may have been somewhere nearby but it was definitely in their home territory.
