Lee?

First I went to the Lee spotswood game early because I was afraid I wouldn't get a good seat. I came away with several thoughts that everyone can argue

1) what is the problem with the Lee jv program? I saw players run around and up and down the court with no direction. The players and coaches?!? argued every call with language or actions.
2) the varsity game was not close. At no point was spotswood in trouble. Lee was undisciplined. Took bad shots. Threw the ball all over. Played no defense. They did run their offense. If their offense is one pass and shoot. And if that offense is called 'I better get my points!!'
3) there is no question by anyone in that gym that Sullivan was the best player on the court. He changes the game when he is in there.
4) my state championship prediction? I stick by it. But after seeing how undisciplined Lee played. How substitutions are made. How players react to the coach. How Lee plays no defense. And how there is no discernible offense being run. I will amend my prediction. I have no doubt that Lee has the best collection of players in the state. But if they don't win the title, it will be because of someone who never touches the court.

This is the wave of the future . Undisciplined teams that run virtually no offense and do what they want on the court. The only ball most of these kids watch is what they see on TNT. In other words, Steph, LeBron, KD, Westbrook, etc. So we get isolation "offense", drives, no defense, tons of 3s - I could go on and on. And perhaps your point number 1 has a lot to do with as well. If the kids are getting away with it on the JV team, they'll bring it with them to Varsity.

I remember when basketball used to be a team game where everyone played a part in the offense, people knew how to play team defense, and officials called the games the way they were supposed to be (traveling, palming, carrying, etc.). Unfortunately the NBA style has trickled down into the lower levels (and that is crap, not basketball imo). I feel like you are right on it with your post, as this is the wave of the future--yet I feel its only going to get worse.

I hear what you are saying. But I didn't see the same from spotswood. What's the difference? Do spotswood players not play AAU?

I have very little knowledge of either program, but what are their feeder programs like? Specifically the middle school and JV coaching?

And ??Really??'s comment on dribble dribble dribble shoot is so spot on!! Except I'd add at least 3 or 4 more dribbles.

spotswood has their own AAU program so from the time those kids enter 3rd grade, they learn Coach Edwards system

This is not the future of all programs. You need to watch a Madison County team play.

Watched Henrico/Highland Springs the other night and wanted to ask the lady at the ticket booth for my $5 back. Kids don't play team ball no more. They try to do things that they're not capable of and it makes the game sloppy. I counted 15+ missed easy layups because like Ant said, they won't use the glass. They want to look pretty and want the crowd to ehhh and ahhh.. I'd much rather watch a system team play than a run and gun team.

Well said DSH. These kids have to keep in mind that it takes a team effort to win a chip. If they did the routine things correctly then you're in there.

Same stuff thats been going on for years and keeps getting worse. True there are a few coaches who still demand discipline and team play, but they are a dying breed. Same mentality as society in general. That's why some kids are turning out the way they are.
