Blog LIVE Blog - Oscar Smith (5-0) at Nansemond River (3-2)

Nansemond River appeared to have something going on its first drive, but the Tigers defense didn't let them get going as Rodney Jones, Malcolm Britt and crew forced a 3 & out.

Oscar Smith's opening possession is extended by a pass interference on 3rd down by the Warriors. Make a mistake and the Tigers generally make you pay.

Nansemond River's second series starts at their own 30. They lose four yards. Their next two plays are an incomplete and a run of 8 or 9 yards by Kevin Johnson of the Warriors.

Oscar Smith takes over at the Warriors 41 following a 6-yard punt by Nansemond River.

So Oscar Smith has good field position with 3:01 left in the first quarter, looking to add to its 7-0 lead.

For the second straight series, the Nansemond River defense hangs tough on first and second down, but the Tigers get a key 3rd down conversion.

Run-oriented, the Warriors may have to abandon that strategy a bit to be able to keep pace.

Kevin Johnson with a 21-yard kickoff return for Nansemond River to their own 44.

Derick Hardy gains 7, but Kevin Johnson loses 5 and then gains 5, tackled on 3rd down by the bone-crunching linebacker of the Tigers, Horace Sawyer.

We've reached the end of 1 period and it's Oscar Smith up 14 on host Nansemond River.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why Nansemond River decides to go for it on 4th down around midfield. They get stopped, so Oscar Smith takes over at the Nansemond River 47-yard line, in front 14-0 and looking to add to that advantage.

The Nansemond River defense gets a stop - Quijoun Gordon and Aaron Whear making a key tackle - as Oscar Smith moved the chains, but a 15-yard personal foul also hurt the drive.

The bad news for the Warriors, trailing 14-0, is that the punt landed inside the 5, and then a penalty on the Warriors put it half the distance at the 2.5 / 3-yard line, so they have to avoid a safety here or punting from their own end zone.

A pair of runs by Kevin Johnson of Nansemond River, tackled each time by Oscar Smith LB Horace Sawyer, brings up 3rd & 3 from their own 10 for the Warriors as they've successfully dug out from their own end zone. The chains move on an offside penalty on Oscar Smith.

Nansemond follows that up with another first down on some nifty running up the middle by Quijoun Gordon, gaining 10 before being brought down by BriQuan Harrell. The Warriors lose one with Derick Hardy, tackled by Rodney Jones. A pitch on 2nd & 11 results in a loss of 3 more as Horace Sawyer and Ricky Thompson were there to sniff it out.

On 3rd & 14, the Warriors go to the air and it's incomplete. So they'll be punting on fourth down.

But on 1st & 10, it's Oscar Smith's Isaiah 'Zeek' Mayes with a sack, dropping the Warriors backwards 4 yards. The very next play is a bobbled snap and Rashaad Williams nearly has his head taken off by Horace Sawyer of Oscar Smith.

Horace Sawyer and the Tigers defense got a little too aggressive on the latest big hit. On 4th & 18 with Warriors QB Kori Riddick scrambling to the sideline, he hits him as he goes out of bounds. Oscar Smith also got hit for another personal foul, half the distance from their 28-yard line to the Warriors 14.

A 5-yard run by Quijoun Gordon puts NR at the 9 of Oscar Smith with under 2 minutes before the half and we have more laundry on the field.

Nansemond River is thwarting this scoring opportunity now with a couple penalties of their own - first a chop block, then a holding - backing them to facing 2nd & 33 from the Oscar Smith 37 with 1:08 before the break and the visiting Tigers comfortably in front 21-0.

Kevin Johnson shows some fancy footwork on a run of 18 yards, where Isaiah Mayes saves a touchdown with his tackle. Mayes is working hard as a two-way starter tonight on the d-line and at center along the o-line. Johnson gets up and walks off gingerly.

It's 3rd & 15 from the OS 19 with 45.4 seconds left in the 2nd period.

A bad snap on the Warriors results in a loss of 12 and we have a time-out and it'll be 4th & 27 from the Oscar Smith 31-yard line with 34.6 seconds left in the opening half for host Nansemond River.

Morgan State commit T.J. Tucker sacks Warriors QB Kori Riddick for a loss of 8.

Tigers take over at their own 39 with 29 seconds till intermission.

At the break ...

Oscar Smith 21:
Cam'Ron Kelly - 5-6 for 64Yds. 1-0TD/Int. ratio; 2Car. 7Yds. TD
Aaron Acevado - 6Car. 28Yds. TD; 1Rec. 5Yds.
Brandon Brock - 1Rec. 39Yds. TD
Horace Sawyer - 5 Tackles, 2TFL

Tigers - 19 plays for 114 total yards; 13 rushes for 50 yards; 5-6 for 64 pass yards (0 turnovers); 7 penalties for 64 yards

A total of 12 tackles for loss on the 25 plays from scrimmage by the Warriors, courtesy of 7 different Tigers defenders.

Nansemond River 0:
Kevin Johnson - 6Car. 33Yds; 2 Tackles
Quijoun Gordon - 7Car. 7Yds; 3 Tackles, TFL
Kori Riddick - 0-3 passing
Aaron Whear - 4 Tackles

Warriors - 25 plays for 11 total yards; 22 rushes for 11 yards; 0-3 passing (0 turnovers); 4 penalties for 45 yards

Oscar Smith begins the second half with the football at their own 34. Cam Kelly, the Auburn commit, keeps it for 11 yards. Aaron Acevado busts a 25-yard run, which is a welcomed sight for Tigers Head Coach since they didn't have that huge gain in the first half via the ground attack.

Behind the defensive front of Datron Branch, Payton Payne, Joeziah Autrey and Rashawn Washington, the Warriors force the Tigers into 3rd & long. Kelly completes a pass, escaping pressure, to Jarius Howard, but it's called back on a holding. That's the 8th penalty, for 86 yards, on Oscar Smith tonight. On 3rd & 37, Kelly's pass is deflected by Kevin Johnson.

A 37-yard punt will have Nansemond River start at its own 18 with 8:59 left in the third quarter, attempting to mount a rally while facing a 21-0 deficit.

Nansemond River is forced to punt and Oscar Smith takes over at the Warriors 35 with 4:34 left in the third quarter. Tigers in control, up 21-0.

Derick Hardy, a two-way contributor at RB/LB and senior for the Warriors, is being helped off the field following Acevado's run of 17 yards puts Oscar Smith in the red zone.

Acevado is saving Oscar Smith's bacon in this 3rd quarter. Nansemond River has to feel demoralized as they could've been down 21-7 and some missed opportunities and the inability to sprinkle in a passing threat has kept them from making this a more competitive ballgame.

The Warriors take over the ensuing kickoff at their own 31 with 2:30 to go in the 3rd period.

A penalty on Nansemond River backs them up to face a 2nd & 15 and T.J. Tucker, the Morgan State commit, reads the underneath pass beautifully. Oscar Smith's Aaron Acevado looks to be cramping up and will be checked on before 3rd & 15 from their own 26 for the Warriors. Well, turns out a penalty of 15 yards on Oscar Smith will give Nansemond River a fresh set of downs.

Oscar Smith begins the fourth quarter where it left off the third quarter -- with suffocating defensive play as Rodney Jones makes a sack for a loss of 9. Jones has been in on five stops behind the line of scrimmage this evening and Nansemond River now has just 15 total yards of offense.

After the punt out of bounds, Oscar Smith takes over at the Nansemond River 43-yard line with 11:03 remaining in this contest.

Given very good field position, Oscar Smith is unable to do much with it here to start the fourth quarter as a couple of incomplete passes along with a sack by Joeziah Autrey forces the Tigers to punt it away.

Smith has completed just of 4 passes for 6 yards here in the second half. Up front, they have some improvement to be made to be prepared for their October 20th showdown with fellow unbeaten Indian River.

Nansemond River takes over after the fair catch on the punt at their own 15 with 8:13 left in the ballgame.

Deondre Davis - the newcomer for Oscar Smith up front from Texas - with a sack on 3rd down. So Nansemond River facing 4th & long from their own 4, punts it away and it goes out of bounds around the 19.

Tigers take over up 28-0 with 6:20 left.

3 and out from the Warriors as the subs are in for Oscar Smith on defense for the most part, but the Warriors still can't get much going offensively - just 15 total yards tonight and only 1 completion for 2 yards.

Oscar Smith takes over at their own 9 with 3:47 to play.
