Greetings from Norfolk, VA and Homecoming on this first Friday in October for 2017 at Booker T. Washington High School. It's a beautiful evening for football - sunny and 82 degrees as we sit 5 minutes before kick-off.

It's an early 6 PM kick-off as the Bookers at 4-2 overall play host to the visiting Broad Run Spartans, undefeated at 5-0 overall and ranked #4 in the state in Class 5 on VirginiaPreps.com.

Broad Run has won the previous two meetings in this series by counts of 53-9 in 2014 and 43-22 back in 2013.

They are honoring Hampton Roads native and Booker T. alum Tony Brothers, an NBA official, tonight as well.

Stay tuned for updates here and my Twitter feed (@hatfieldsports) that we will be providing tonight...

Booker T. Washington gets the ball to begin and they start at their own 25. The Bookers have scored 109 points during this three-game winning streak they enter with tonight. Coach D.J. Alexander has used two different quarterbacks in junior Dytorius Fuller and sophomore Larry Parker Jr. Fuller gets the start.

Fuller completes his first pass for 6 yards. But on 3rd & 2 he is picked off by Broad Run's Kesean Dyson, a sophomore outside 'backer. Dyson runs it back 30 yards for a touchdown, but it is called back on a penalty. However, it came after the INT. So the Spartans start with a takeaway and get good field position for their first possession, at the Bookers 30.

The Bookers come out pretty conservative offensively on their second possession. Three straight run plays picking up just four yards. Broad Run d-lineman John Birchmeier, a junior with next-level potential, was in on one of those stops. BTW ran a QB draw on 2nd down.

After the punt, Broad Run will begin on its own 26 with a 7-0 lead with 7:58 left in the opening stanza.

Griffis, a 10th grader with a lot of promise and good size to play the position to boot, got the defender to bite on a pump fake and found Turner on a go route. The Spartans are now driving deep into Booker T. territory, at the 21 following a 12-yard run from Tim Baldwin.

Correction - Mitch is the son and QB, Matt is the dad and Coach.

But son Mitch pointed out my faux pas later and had fun with it...

Nice creativity offensively from Broad Run with the quads look (4 wide receivers). Griffis run out of it on 2nd & 10 to gain 8. Then on 3rd & 2, he finds Turner on a crossing pattern. Turner shakes a defender on his way to the end zone.

Broad Run couldn't have asked for a sharper start offensively. Take away two penalties for 20 yards -- and they had 11 last week against Rock Ridge, so that's a point of emphasis to clean up -- and it has been a near flawless start after this five-hour bus trip down to Norfolk.

From what i can tell in the press box - it appears Broad Run has come out in a couple of different looks defensively. A bit of 5-2 at the start, and then now on 3rd down they have three down linemen. Either way, the rush is getting there pretty early.

The Bookers made a QB switch to Larry Parker, but it doesn't result in their first move of the chains of the night. Three plays get them just one yard and it's another punt.

Broad Run starts its third series at their own 44 with 4:15 left in the opening quarter. The Spartans lead it 14-0... and they're looking for more.

That's a hearty yards per play average for the Spartans. 3 series, 3 touchdowns.

Already, Tim Baldwin has 5 rushes for 91 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Baldwin is a different style of back than former Broad Run stud Meech Hembry, who would just run over defenders. Baldwin has a different gear to him and runs away from people.

Booker T. needs to find some kind of answer quickly. The level of competition they've faced thus far - beating three winless teams to get to 4-2 - is showing, while the Spartans faced some Top 10 level teams in Tuscarora, Potomac Falls, John Champe and Woodgrove.

Booker T. does itself no favors. Freshman Rodney Hammond - who had over 200 yards rushing in a win over Maury earlier this season and is a name to know for the future - rips off a 19-yard run. But the Bookers cough it up, with the fumble recovered by Willie Jordan of Broad Run.

They get their 3rd TD run of the period from Baldwin one play after a 20-yard catch by the 5'7" wideout Detwaun Turner, an early favorite through the air for QB Mitch Griffis.

Though down 28 - Booker T. freshman Rodney Hammond has showed off a couple of electric runs. He has 6 carries for 53 yards. But he's been upstaged to this point by sophomore Tim Baldwin of Broad Run. Baldwin has half of his 6 carries going for 111 yards and 3TD's.

11:43 left 2ndQ - Broad Run 28, Booker T. Washington 6. Rodney Hammond 2-yard TD run after Dytorius Fuller 38-yard completion to Tim White. PAT was no good following a time-out.

Booker T. has done some good things offensively once they abandoned the conservative approach and got aggressive. They have 105 yards from scrimmage. They do have 2 turnovers that have contributed directly to 14 Broad Run points. Their defense also is searching for solutions considering they've given up 200 yards in one quarter alone.

Mitch Griffis now 5 of 6 for 130 yards through the air. Three of those completions have gone to different receivers, the latest being Everett Drake on a 49-yard hookup down the field. Broad Run has 249 yards of offense on 13 plays... and we still have 11:15 to go before half-time. They are simply shredding this Booker T. defense. The Bookers call for time and look to make some kind of adjustments to try to keep Broad Run out of the end zone.

The extra point failed, but no much else has for Broad Run. Coach Matt Griffis' Spartans have scored touchdowns on all six offensive possessions.

QB Mitch Griffis is now 10 of 14 for 221 yards passing and three touchdowns. He's completed passes to four different receivers. Hale now has two receptions for scores, measuring 64 yards.

And for all you fans keeping track at home - Broad Run now has 349 total yards on 24 plays. An incredible display.

How about some love to that Broad Run defense? Senior LB Michael Arrington has been in on at least 4 tackles. Ditto for junior LB John Birchmeier. They've led the way with senior DB Tiege Thompson also making some key stops.

Booker T. punts it away and Broad Run has it at the Bookers 20 with 2:22 to go before half, leading comfortably 41-6.

Keep in mind that Broad Run brought in its second unit offense - with sophomore QB Bennett Millar in relief of Mitch Griffis and junior RB Josh Anderson-Jessup to spell sophomore Tim Baldwin - for their starters on the team's 7th possession of the opening half.

When it rains, it pours. Bookers just fumbled ensuing kickoff. Recovered by Broad Run's Tiege Thompson at the Bookers 7 with 25 seconds left in the second period.

Broad Run junior DB Luke Lindenfeldar intercepts intercepts a Booker T. pass. Broad Run takes a knee.

Half - Broad Run 54, Booker T. Washington 6.

For those wondering - the Spartans scored their season-high of 56 two weeks ago against Rock Ridge.

Some numbers...

* Broad Run with 366 total yards of offense at the break

* QB Mitch Griffis of the Spartans was 10 of 14 for 221 yards passing, 3 touchdowns... and he sat the final two offensive possessions.

* RB Tim Baldwin - who like Griffis is a sophomore - rushed for 120 yards and three touchdowns on 9 carries.

* Broad Run had four takeaways in the first half - two off interceptions from Kesean Dyson and Luke Lindenfeldar - and two off fumble recoveries from Willie Jordan and Tiege Thompson.

* Booker T. Washington had 24 plays from scrimmage go for 110 total yards. Freshman RB Rodney Hammond led the way with 10 rushes for 61 yards and their lone touchdown.

Second half will begin with a running clock (the customary 35 point lead in VHSL football for the second half for those unfamiliar with it... and if you are, no disrespect meant, but where you been?).

Broad Run starts at their own 33. Subs remain in for Matt Griffis' Spartans.

Broad Run second-stringers go 3 and out for the first punt of the night by the Spartans. Booker T. scores on their first play from scrimmage in the second half on a beautiful 72-yard TD run from freshman Rodney Hammond, zigging and zagging his way to the end zone.

I'm not going to lie friends / fans - I am half watching this second half with a running clock and Broad Run sitting on a 42-point cushion. I am more scoreboard watching other games.

One thing that is somewhat interesting - Booker T. ran one play the entire third quarter and that was Hammond's long TD run.

Broad Run possessed the football for 11:19 of the 12 minutes in the period, milking clock.

Tayeon Woods, who had a nice game for Booker T. a week ago with four touchdowns against Churchland, comes up with a 44-yard reception into Broad Run territory on the pass from Dytorius Fuller. Time is quickly evaporating, thanks to the running clock, in this one.

Outside of his one fumble, the freshman Hammond has been terrific tonight for the host Bookers on Homecoming, even in a losing effort.

He's gained 102 of those 163 yards after intermission against Broad Run's second unit, so we do have to point that out.
