Greetings from a soggy Beard-DeLong-Easley Field in Chesapeake as the 13-time reigning Southeastern District Champion Oscar Smith Tigers (5-1) play host to a much improved and undefeated Deep Creek Hornets (6-0) bunch.

Each is led by a first-year Head Coach with Scott Johnson, a longtime assistant in the district, guiding the Tigers. Meanwhile, Andre Twine has taken over Deep Creek and in his first gig as a Head Coach has surprised many with the job he's done to this point.

Both squads are giving up less than 7 points per game. Given the rainy conditions, this could be a low-scoring affair. The Tigers come in riding a 96-game Southeastern District winning streak.

It's Homecoming here at Oscar Smith as well.

Damion Everette uncorks a 32-yard run after the punt as the Hornets are near midfield, at the Smith 44, on this second series.

Couple big stops by Kyle Thomas (Rutgers pledge) and Jalen Moore put Deep Creek in 3rd & 16 though.

The Deep Creek defense has come out very aggressive and playing sound football with tough hitting.

Yosef Woods gets a tackle for loss for the Hornets and a pass breakup from Aden Smith.

Interesting to note that Dominique Brooks is now in at QB for the Tigers after Cam Kelly behind under center the first series.

Deep Creek has Michael Eure in at QB for the injured Tesean Jones, who went down during the team's comeback win at Indian River. He's nursing a left knee injury, but Head Coach Andre Twine hopes to have him back in the lineup soon.

This has taken on the look of a defensive grudge-match, probably what both teams and coaching staffs like. However, it makes it more dangerous for Oscar Smith.

Nonetheless, the Tigers force another Deep Creek punt, shortly after a 31-yard ripped off by Hornets RB Damion Everette. It was a splendid run by Everette, going this time to the left (the pitch to the right earlier), but the Tigers defense stiffens and they are getting excellent penetration through the middle.

A 6-yard pass on 3rd & 10 from Dominique Brooks to Kenny Etheridge brings up 4th & 4 around midfield for Oscar Smith on its 3rd series... but any thought of going for it is thrown away after a 15-yard penalty by the Tigers.

Just the second defensive touchdown of the year for Oscar Smith, but it couldn't have come at a better time. Both touchdown came off Deep Creek lost fumbles. The Hornets also had a safety on a snap that rolled into and out of the end zone when trying to punt. The Tigers are capitalizing on opportunities like a great team does, thus why they are well on their way to extending the Southeastern District winning streak to 97 games.

Artis is really making his presence felt defensively with some enormous hits on defense. Then on 3rd down, it's Jalen Moore and Kyle Thomas teaming for a sack of Hornets QB Michael Eure.

Deep Creek being so one-dimensional on offense, relying on the run without much of a pass and a backup QB, is keeping them from sustaining any drives. Plus, the Tigers defense and the weather aren't helping matters either.

Some more quick numbers...

For Oscar Smith at the break:
Deangelo White - 6Car. 31ds.
Keshon Artis - 1Car. 4Yds. TD; 4 Tackles (3 Solo), TFL
Dominique Brooks - 1 of 4 for 6 yards passing
Jalen Moore - 5 Tackles, 1.5TFL, Sack, 30-yard Fumble Return TD
Kyle Thomas - 4 Tackles, 1.5TFL, Sack

Tigers with 77 total yards on 19 plays; 71 rush yards on 15 carries and 1 for 4 passing with 6 yards; 0 turnovers; 4 penalties for 36 yards

For Deep Creek at the break:
Damion Everette - 10Car. 57Yds; 3 Tackles, 0.5TFL
X'zavion Evans - 2Car. 7Yds.
Antonio Turner - 4 Tackles (3 Solo), TFL
Isaiah Jennings - 3 Tackles

Deep Creek is 0 for 3 through the air; 2 turnovers (both lost fumbles); 3 penalties for 35 yards

Everette had two runs of 32 and 31 yards, respectively, but it has been tough sledding.

Oscar Smith begins on its own 25-yard line to start the second half. Coach Scott Johnson of the Tigers still keeps Dominique Brooks at QB, which gives them the option use Class of 2019 standout prospect Cam'Ron Kelly at receiver as well as on defense in the secondary, where he's primarily being recruited for the next level.

Another defensive penalty for Deep Creek. Earlier, it came on 4th down. This time is's on 3rd & 11 as Oscar Smith finds a matchup to attack with a WR - Shy'keem Hussey - against a linebacker. That'll move the Tigers into Hornets territory and a great chance to extend their 15-0 lead.

Some pretty good running from Deangelo White - 3 carries for 14 yards - on that Tigers possession that was aided by 35 yards in penalties from Deep Creek.

The Tigers are controlling the line of scrimmage tonight and Deep Creek can't get anything offensively. They go 3 and out on their first series of the half.

Wilson is a neat story. Only 5-7, 170 pounds, he was often hidden in the backfield and overshadowed by 1000-yard rusher Denagelo White as well as Keyon Watson. But he's been reliable in the red zone and seen his workload increase this year.

Denagelo White is really starting to wear out that Deep Creek defense and some of the weight he gained in the off-season paying off here in this second half with some strong runs between the tackles. White has 60 yards on 12 carries with 29 yards in the third period alone.

This is a vital drive here for Deep Creek, needing to get past midfield at the very least if they can't score. It's probably going to take a defensive touchdown or special teams score to make things interesting in the final few minutes of this one. Oscar Smith's defense has been too strong at all three levels, but especially good in the trenches.

White made a couple nifty moves once he got to the second and third level of the defense. We can't leave out the job of this Oscar Smith offensive line tonight - the likes of Omega Williams, William Daniel, Isaiah Mayes, Kyle Thomas and James Collins - have kept Deep Creek's d-line from putting its fingerprints on this game like they have against every other opponent this season.
