Be it a player, coach or fan, there is always that loss that you never forget. That loss that you close your eyes and remember more than any other. In most cases that loss comes in the playoffs but lets take the playoffs out of the equation... what regular season loss do you find it painful to remember?

Maybe it is a game that ended a perfect regular season or knocked you completely out of the playoffs. Maybe it is a loss where your coach was leaving and went out with the L instead of the W. Maybe it was a rivalry loss. Maybe it was a loss due to losing a star on the team.

Whatever the reason we as fans, coaches and players all have that loss that we never forget, what is yours and why?

Probably the 1978 State Championship game HSHS vs Annandale. Both teams 13-0. Annandale was ranked #1 Nationally and HSHS was ranked #3 Nationally!!! Not only was the the State Championship. It was deemed the National Championship!!
HS dominated the 1st half scoring 7 points, but missed a field goal. Second half started with HS still dominating and scored another TD but missing the PAT. HS up 13-0 late in the 3rd qtr.
Annandale mounted a comeback scoring a TD toward the end of the 3rd. Then in the 4th, Annandale got good field possession off of a bad kick and went in and score a touchdown with only a little bit of time left, Annandale wins the game 14-13.... Annandale finished 14-0. HS 13-1
Annandale was declared National Champs and HS finished ranked #13. If not for the kicking game.... it still stings, 42 years later! Here is video of that game. The whole game!!

That definitely stings but I was referring to regular season losses. Reason I thought of this topic is I was talking to former Springer coach Scott Burton last night and we were talking about that double OT game at the end of the 2005 season in which your Springers beat the Blue Devils for the first time in close to a decade and not only exercised that demon but kept the Blue Devils who came in undefeated with one of their best teams out of the playoffs! I know you remember that one. He recalled that game with great detail as do I sitting on the Varina side that night. Before my days as a writer and merely a fan that was the one loss I remember above all others that I can close my eyes and go back to with detail.

I do remember that game... For me (or us), it had to be one of those season ending losses to Varina! The Devils ended the Springers playoff hopes several times!!!! Damn those Devils:mad:

Monacan v. Lake Taylor in 2014 4A State semifinals is the most memorable loss in the RVA area in my lifetime considering the circumstances. I was not at the game but two coaches I know where in attendance and there’s multiple videos on YouTube.

The backdrop was this was Jim Henderson’s 2nd year at Monacan, which was a school under .500 the decade before he got to Monacan. The 2014 Monacan team was a really good team but were only the 3rd best team in the Dominion District. Bird and Manchester beat Monacan really bad that year (I went to Bird game and it was a blowout).

Monacan was a massive underdog to a undefeated Lake Taylor who had beat the eventual 3-time 5A State Champ LC Bird earlier that year. Lake Taylor had at least 6-8 D-1 kids on that team and had beat every team except for Bird by 4+ scores. Most people thought LT would win by 30-40 pts.

Monacan was up 14-12 as Lake Taylor lined up for FG on the last play of the game. This video gives a pretty summary.

I was at that game and it was one of the most hearbreaking losses I have ever seen a team endure let alone wild ending to the game.

A lot younger than a lot of you in here... As a Mountain View alum in Stafford Va, A regular season game loss I'll never forget came in 2012 to the North Stafford team that lost to Lake Taylor in the Semi Finals on a last second FG... This game what made this game hurt so much wasn't it being so close or anything... But how humbling it was for us, we were a pretty good team ourselves had a D-1 WR and other solid players across the board but they were just a buzzsaw and very well could've won states if they had held on vs Lake Taylor in that semi-final game

I was there and it also just happened to land on my birthday to make things worse. Devastating loss for my Chiefs. That LT team was ranked nationally if I am not mistaken. They went on to win the class 4 final easily the following week. They were very fortunate to be playing in that game. The football gods love Hank Sawyer, he has a few last second wins that defy logic.

Is it safe to assume that is by far the worst birthday ever for you?

Monacan will be back this year if they can get past Dinwiddie. I think Dinwiddie and Monacan will both be able to compete with LT this year. Louisa loses a lot but they’ll be in the pic too.

it was pretty bad to go from elation to being crushed in 6 seconds. The game Monacan played verse Heritage NN was a whale of a game the previous Friday. As for the LT game... What a game that was. We missed so many tackles on their QB in the last few drives... had him dead in the water and he wiggled free so many times for big plays down field. They earned that comeback but even their XP’s where suspect that season so I knew we had a good shot at blocking it. Literally the way an irregular shaped oval bounces after a blocked field goal made one teams dream a reality and another’s ambition come crashing to the grass. I still can’t believe we lost that game! If we got that win it would have changed the trajectory and narrative around our program.

man I just hope we have a season at all with all that is going on. We are going to be pretty solid but I don’t know how we will stack up with others in the region. We may lose a few players to eligibility issues but still will have plenty to be a contender. Nothing would make me happier than a breakthrough season. The program and our school could use a little good fortune. The injury bug crushed us last season and this season in basketball as well. Ugh, don’t get me started!
