Well since we got 'robbed' of the state tournament this year (for the most part), I decided to go down memory lane and check out some of my VHSL State Basketball Tournament programs from the past years.

And since the Luray Lady Bulldogs came up one game short against Gate City, this one pays tribute to the boys team that won the state title back in the day.

This one is from 1969-1970 season - exactly 50 years ago.

Luray won it all, beating Castlewood in the semis, and then Hayden in the finals - it was called Group II back then (other two groups were Group 1-A and Group III).

Here's a picture of the Luray team from that season, as well as the cover of the state tournament program/brackets:

Luray won the next year as well. Beating King George in the semifinals and Thomas Walker in the finals. Wonder how I knew this?

Like me you were jealous of the Bulldogs in those days. They had some great athletes

Were either or both of those Chick Crawford-coached teams?

Buddy Comer is listed as the Coach for Luray in the 1970-1971 state program.

The 1969-1970 program doesn't give the coach's name.

Chick Crawford was the coach of the first state championship team. He left following that season and Buddy Comer was the coach of the second state title winner the following season.

I knew that Chick had won at least one title at Luray but did not remember the year. For those of you who might have missed the news, he passed away recently.
