Northumberland Boys Soccer traveled to Warsaw and upset the recent kings of Northern Neck soccer - Rappahannock 4-2. It was 2-1 at the half and 4 -1 with like 10 min left.

JV was a 2-2 tie.

Rapp Raiders have won the NND title 3 or 4 years in a row now (Essex was King for most of the decade before that with W&L as their main rival - heavy weight fights those were).

I don't think Rapp has lost a NND game in maybe three years. Rapp was the top team in Region A so far this season and made it to the state title game last season (lost to powerhouse Galax).

Rapp returned like 9 or 10 starters, as did NHS. As I said before this season, look for the Indians to challenge the Raiders this year as all those underclassmen who have started since the 9th grade are now upperclassmen.

Great job to the Indians and the great coaching staff as they completed another milestone victory for the program.

W&L also is looking good as they whipped Lancaster 6-2. I'll add some more scores maybe tomorrow.

First off Congrats to the kids @ Northumberland. I wouldn't call it a major upset. I'd say it was a big win for them. I've seen both programs play a couple games both are very good teams. What I don't understand is how is it Rapp beat Northampton 3-0 and Northumberland lost to Northampton 1-0 then Northumberland goes out and wins this game from what you said fairly easily. I definitely wasn't expecting a 4-2 game thought Northumberland would have to work a little harder but thats why I love this game. Again congrats to those kids i know it was a game that they wanted

Thanks for the response!

I know what you are saying about it being a big win v a major upset. I think that many in the NND (especially including Indian fans) would consider it a big upset based on the last decade or so of history and Rapp's recent dominance the last 3 years.

I am thinking that Rapp had no real concern about who would win coming into the match - I am not sure if any of these Raider kids had ever lost a varsity NND game yet? NHS came close last year 1-0 the 1st game. That was said to be a fluke by some....

I am fairly sure Rapp was really shocked by the play of and to lose to NHS (yes, who had just lost at home to Northampton who Rapp had no issue with them on the Eastern Shore).

Rapp started off very well last night but could not finish as well as they usually do (of course, NHS D and superb Indian Goalie Joe Schindler, 8 shutouts last year, had a little to say about that).

NHS was also missing D star and all region, Jr. Captain Harry "The General" Lee who sat out with an injury.

Game was scoreless for a long time. NHS scored the 1st goal - massive momentum shift. The mental game is vital.

NHS will not surprise anyone any more! W and L is rocking. Rapp is still very good and this loss will focus their heavy veteran team all the more.

Should be an exciting season all around - I need to check on the Tidewater and the other teams of late. Or please report if known.

correction - I was informed that Rapp has had two local losses during the last three title seasons. RHS pretty much crushed everyone last season but had a loss in 2017 and one in 2016 - Both to the W&L Eagles (who were 2A those two years I believe which may have threw me off a tad there).

The NND has sent 4 teams to the State Final Four in the last 5 years. Rapp (2018, 2017) W&L (2015) and Essex (2014).

The losses in either the semis or finals were to Galax, Radford, Riverheads and maybe Northampton.

Looks like the Tidewater is up in the air without a clear favorite as of now. West Point and Middlesex play tonight which I'll be at so that could clear things up a lil. Mathews looks to be the tougher team this year with a 3-1 win over Middlesex they have also played Rapp and Northumberland in very good games losing 5-4 against Northumberland and losses of 2-1 and 6-1 to Rapp. Washington and Lee is playing good soccer also watch out for Windsor and maybe Franklin.
