Pretty much what you would expect from a 6A team against a 2A team, Marshall was 50 pounds heavier at every position and when there was a change of possession they sent on a bunch of new players while the Mason guys just stayed on the field.

Marshall probably had another 400+ rushing yard night, once their QB Margiotta got in the open field no one could catch him. Mason gave a good effort and had a nice scoring drive in the second quarter where they went full snowplow and ran the ball straight down Marshall's throat, but they were just outmanned.

Marshall gets a ton of playoff points for this, although I don't know how many more games Mason will win now that they're into their district schedule.

Does Marshall have a new head coach or what? Why is Marshall doing much better this season?

Thank you for the article on the game.

I don't know if Marshall has a new coach or not, and they are 6-1. But look at who they have played. They lost to Madison (no surprise there) and then beat 6 of the worst teams in NOVA. They barely beat Annandale, who is average-at best. They will not get past the first round of the playoffs unless they get the right matchup. Without running the numbers, I strongly expect they will get a 3-5 seed (where they end up depends on the outcome of the Westfield-Centreville and Centreville-Madison games). That will mean their most likely opponents will be either Madison, Centreville, or Patriot. Not looking good.

I believe Marshall's coach is in his fourth year. They do play a weak schedule but they are still much improved relative to when they lost 25 in a row. They run an old-school offense teams don't see a lot anymore, out-physical the teams on their schedule, and their QB is pretty fast and slippery. I agree that they'll have a tough time in the playoffs.

Rising enrollments have helped Marshall and a few of the other weaker programs in the area. Stuart, for example, is far from a powerhouse, but they dress 50 kids and are competitive in that district, which is a lot better than they were a decade ago.

At the start of the season, I noticed that Marshall's first opponent was Madison, and I asked if Marshall was being punished or what. Someone said that Marshall's enrollment grew, making Marshall a 6A team. I thought to myself that there was no way Marshall could survive in 6A football.

Eight weeks later, I have been impressed with Marshall and its football program. Even though Marshall has a weak schedule, Marshall still has accomplished a lot, and we should applaud them.
