I know this is 5a, but I wanted to post it here. I found out about this scrimmage from the article updating Salem's turf field. The scrimmage will be at 10:30 Gainer Field. I'm going to try and make it. I want to see how PH looks, but I'm even more interested in seeing Ponax. I'm going to the Salem/MV/Brookville scrimmage as well at 6. It will be a busy day of football and I'll post a review when I get home.

Don't take anything from this. Ponax will be minimal and basic. But you should see the power and how the no huddle, triple option, hurry up can be a problem. I would imagine this to be 10 plays offense / 10 plays defense. No more than 1 or 2 series for starters. No special teams. Can't wait for your write up. Enjoy.

Yeah scrimmages are just glorified practices basically but you can see speed, power, matchups, etc... I've seen triple option, via the wing, when Christiansburg & Amherst were really good, but interested to see how Massaponax will look. I'm also interested to see PH's QB, he's got a good arm & accuracy. As you say this will be 10 plays per team, probably 2 series for the starters then 2 series for the backups. Usually each team gets 40 offensive plays, 2 series for the starters (20 plays) & 2 series for the backups. (20 plays) Ponax has 98 players on their roster, big difference between 5a & 4a. I doubt they'll bring all of them, probably just what will fit on 1 bus.

Well sorry to disappoint you Shauntclair but there was not much from the scrimmage that I can report. Massaponax jersey's didn't have numbers so I can't be specific about individual players. I can make generalizations though. First team was only out there for 2 series. They came up a yard short of scoring on their first series after steadily and methodically moving down the field 7 yards at a time. I think they threw it maybe twice while first team was out. On the second series they again moved down the field and scored this time around.

While Massaponax found the ground game inviting, Patrick Henry was not so lucky or good against Ponax' defense. 2 or 3 guys were getting penetration about every play. Once they realized running the ball was mostly fruitless PH went to the air more and found that much more inviting. As I knew, PH's QB was a big reason for the success of the aerial attack. He played at least 3 series, once against Ponax' 2nd team. He looked good against either squad as long as he got rid of the ball quickly. Massaponax had several coverage "sacks"- Referees blew the whistle if it appeared a sack was inevitable. PH had a couple of missed opportunities, a sure TD pass was dropped and another time the QB probably should have pulled the ball down and ran for what looked like an open lane to the endzone.

Overall I think Massaponax "won" the scrimmage 2-0. With the first team only playing 2 series it's hard to draw much from the scrimmage. Both teams did some things well, and at times both showed they have things to work on. Overall Massaponax looked better and moved the ball well on the ground. Patrick Henry looked good through the air. Ponax really controlled the line of scrimmage most of the game.

Thanks Mike. About what I expected. Ponax is always very powerful at the line of scrimmage. Lucky you saw them pass at all and they most likely only ran the basest of their offense. Very physical bunch.

PH has a QB. Nice to hear and good luck to them in 2015 (until they play Salem of course;)).
