Final was actually 62-43 as one of our JVs who was brought up scored a final bucket. (We will take all the points we can get!)
The story was simply that Riverheads had no match for Mathews' senior star Stuart Anderson. When he wasn't scoring from anywhere and everywhere on the floor, he was dishing off the assist. They were a very well-coached team and having just seen Altavista last week, I would put Mathews a step above them.
Riverheads as usual was led by its freshmen duo of Braeson Fulton and Grant Painter, who combined for 27 of the Gladiators' 43. No one else could find the range with any consistency, as the next highest guy only had four.
The Gladiators stuck with the host team for almost the entire first half. The first quarter was especially tight and would have ended 16-15 if not for a late three from Anderson that gave the Devils a 19-15 lead at the horn.
He then sat for a rest to open the second, and that allowed Riverheads to string a few points together and take their only lead of the game at 26-25 on a short jumper from Fulton. But Anderson returned and Mathews finished the half on a 12-2 run to take a 37-28 lead into the locker room.
Both teams came out ice cold to start the second half and neither scored for about the first three minutes. The Devils finally broke the ice but it took RHS almost six minutes to get its first second half points. The quarter ended 50-33.
Painter and Fulton were pretty tuckered out by that point and were eventually subbed and sophomores Forrest Shuey and Josh Kinzel (the JV promotion) joined Bradley Roberts in the scoring column, along with a three from freshman Elijah Dunlap.
I have not seen a box score but the high 20s to even 30 would not surprise me for Anderson. For local folks back here in the Valley, picture Javon Butler from East Rock and you would have a pretty good comparison in terms of size, leadership, and athleticism.
So the Devils will be the ones moving to Cumberland later this week, and then making about a 400 mile trip to Bristol for the state quarters and semis. I believe they get another crack at Lancaster on Thursday.
Riverheads finishes 10-13, which is actually not a bad season at all for such an incredibly young team. They progressed a lot faster than expected and with a little experience under their belts, they will be fine in the coming years.
The Lady Devils now come to Riverheads tomorrow night in a 5 at 4 match-up. From the look of some of the players I saw roaming the halls tonight, the Lady Gladiators could be in for a battle.
