My Friends, Saturday is a special day for the community of Galax and Galax High School. The Maroon Tide football team is playing Riverheads High for the D1 State Championship in Salem. This game is special because it pits two of Virginia's best football programs in division D1 against each other, but also showcases two of the best Coaches in the Commonweath, Coach Dixon vs Coach Casto. What a battle this is shaping up to be in Salem.
Football is special to folks in SWVA. Every year when you can get a felling that the season is about to start, your thoughts about your team seems to bring a since of warmth and special feelings runs through your body. It's that time of the year when we are thinking, what kind of team are we going to have.....can we be competitive.....what players do have coming back.
Galax High will represent all of the small schools in Southwest Virginia. We could not ask for a better school to represent us Saturday. Galax High is a special school. They are a model school that has been very successful in many sports, and at the same time, puts education first and formost in the educational system.
The community of Galax have adopted a plan that ensures that every student athlete has the same opportunity for success irregardless any socioeconomic factors. Those things, My Friends, is what makes Galax special. The community is heavily involved in this team, and it appears to be a family team of young athletes, supported by the community in many ways. This football team is the product of the philosophy of the school administration, and the people of the community.
Success did not come quick this year for Galax. Galax played the toughest scheduled it could find for the first half of the season. The result was a record of only 1 win and 4 loses. What Galax produced afterwards was nine straight wins, and a chance Saturday of a dream coming true for the team and the community of Galax, a State Championship.
Champions are a product of hard work, dedication, brotherly love, and good old fashioned blood, sweat, and tears, with the direction of a great coaching staff, backed by a group of enabling administrators, and a very supportive community. Galax's mission is one win away, and it is there for young men that will take the field Saturday.
Let it be said that Galax will stand tall Saturday. They will accept victory with grace and dignity, just as they did when faced with the feeling of defeat. That, My Friends is what Champions are made of in the eyes of our maker. When the final seconds tick down, there will be no losers on the field, as both teams have proven their character as winners by being in the final game. Both have fought many battles, and now face the final outcome.
May the victor be defined by the way he accepts victory, and may he wrap his arms around his companions of battle for their courage and in the spirit of sportmanship. If they are on the side of defeat, it is only in the numbers on the scoreborad. It shall not define either team in any way, as the game was fought hard, in the spirit of love of the game, just like our maker tells us not to judge one another, but to rejoice in the fact that we have fought a good battle and in the spirit of God.
