The first upset of the postseason in Southwest Virginia occurred on Thursday night.

Makenzie Harmon poured in 28 points as sixth-seeded Fort Chiswell knocked off No. 3 Rural Retreat in the first round of the Mountain Empire District tournament.

Fort Chiswell opened up leads of 13-4 and 25-11 and never looked back.

Kaitlyn Trivitt (14 points) and Michaela Fiscus (10 points) were Rural Retreat’s top scorers.

George Wythe 59, Auburn 27

Drea Betts had 19 points and four rebounds as George Wythe dominated in taking a win over Auburn in the first round of the Mountain Empire District tournament.

Paeton Phillippi (11 points, seven rebounds, three steals) and MacKenzie Ingo (six points, eight rebounds, seven assists, seven steals) also played well for the Maroons. An 18-2 second-quarter run put the game away for head coach Doug Campbell’s club.
