Game Recap Monacan Wins Close Call Against Western Branch

Monacan and Western Branch played a barn burner in the 9th Annual VirginiaPreps Classic and the defending State champion Chiefs came out on top 59-57. Western Branch trailed by two with under a minute to go in the game but the couldn't tie the game despite four good looks inside the paint. The final attempt, a backwards stickback off a rebound, fell short as time expired.

The lead alternated in the 1st half until Monacan took the edge with two 3-pointers from Nystil Wilson to give them a 29-28 at halftime lead.

Monacan started the 3rd quarter with an 8-0 run to push the Chiefs lead to 37-28 with 5:26 to go. They never trailed in the 2nd half although the game remained close. They led 50-43 with five minutes to go in the game.

Western Branch guard K.J. Simmons scored six straight points for Western Branch to cut the Monacan lead to 52-50 midway thru the final quarter.

A turnover by Monacan setup a possible overtime but Western Branch miss three inside shots that could have given them the lead. After a free throw by Monacan gave the Chiefs a 59-57 lead, Simmons missed an open three and Sostre missed the stickback to end the game.

Junior Myles Loving (6-foot-4) earned MVP honors after scoring 15 points on 7 of 8 shooting with three steals. Wallace Washington and Trejvon McFail scored 14 points each. McFail led the Chiefs with 12 rebounds while Washington added five assists.

Western Branch was led by Simmons who scored 24 points. D.J Driscoll almost had a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Kendall Bynum was scoreless from the field but he had four assists, five rebounds and two steals.
