Just like last year, this is just for fun and is totally just my opinion and not meant to slight any school, so don't beat me up too bad. Lol
1. Riverheads - Gladiators have only played one game, but return just about everyone from last year's state team that took Surry to the wire. Grant Painter is one of the best in the state.
2. Grundy - Led by 6'7 big man Cade Looney, the Wave picked back up where they left off last season. Veteran team, but losing Hamilton Campbell to a transfer is still a tough loss.
3. George Wythe - Losing Josh Reeves to graduation was expected. Losing Ty Farrow to a transfer was not. Still the Maroons have veterans and always seem to be in the mix.
4. Northampton - The Yellow Jackets from the Eastern Shore are off to a 5-1 start with the only blemish, a 1 point loss to rival Arcadia. They also own a 1 point OT win over Lancaster.
5. JI Burton - The Raiders lost 2 big time scorers in Williams and Thacker last season, but thus far they are still flourishing. Included are a 33 point win over Honaker and a 17 point win over 2A Ridgeview.
6. Lancaster - The Devils have 3 losses on the season, but two of them are to really good private schools and the other was the earlier mentioned one point loss to Northampton.
7. Eastside - The 2 time state runner up Spartans have 3 early losses against tough competition, but behind Ethan Powers, they will once again have a say in Region D and on the state level.
8. Mathews - To some, the Blue Devils might be a surprise, but not to me. They returned their entire team from last year and I expected them to do well. They have nice wins over King William, two over perennial Region A contender Northumberland, W&L and Charles City.
9. Auburn - The Eagles are another team that has played a tough early season schedule that might make some overlook them. Behind sophomore point guard, Ethan Millirons, they will still be a force to be reckoned with at the 1A level and have the potential to beat anyone.
10. Bland - The Bears were in the Region C mix last year and return a lot of their key components. A bit of a head scratcher last night in a 1 point loss to Eastern Montgomery, after already beating them by 35, dropped them a few spots from where I might have ranked them.
Others to watch. No particular order.
