Hello everyone.

First off. MacOS Numbers sucks. Excel is far superior. OK then. I had to get that out of the way.

Secondly, here's my approach on how to break down schools evenly in a four-class setup using the current ADM numbers. I know this is only a fantasy world using current numbers instead of numbers which will affect things starting in 2023 and beyond, but I wanted to show how easy it could be if the VHSL just got out of their own way. This is not ideal for all 319 schools and no, there wasn't an intentional vendetta by me to place your school alongside teams you're not familiar with.

Currently, and in the immediate future, there are 319 high schools which are members of the VHSL. I know not all of them play football. However, I've decided to break out the schools into four classes with four regions per class having 20 schools with the exception of Class 4 Region 3 which has 19 schools.

My regions start out west and move east (westernmost Region 1, then Region 2, etc as you move east). I may not have gotten the geography absolutely perfect, and yes, there will be some travel for some schools. But I tried to balance things out.

I based this on equal fourths.

Now, out of these regions, you can form districts. Yes, there will be some longtime districts which will look completely different than in the past. However, the reasoning behind this is that you can either do four five-team districts or two ten-team districts out of each region. Eight teams would make the playoffs from each region (two from each district if there are four districts in a region...four from each district if there are two districts in a region). This makes district play relevant again and very important as how you play in your district equates to if you will be playing in the postseason. Where you finish in your district will affect your playoff seeding if you make the playoffs.

A total of 128 of the 319 schools would make the playoffs (40%).

My proposal would have the VHSL draw up the districts based on the schools in the allocated regions. Texas does this and it leads to great anticipation every two years. Of course teams will move up or down as enrollment varies over a cycle so just think of this as a two-year cycle. (Not sure why the VHSL went to a four-year cycle anyways if they are letting teams up move and down mid-cycle.)

If there are four districts in each region, the regional playoffs would look like this. Higher seed would host. If both seeds are the same, then OOD head-to-head (if possible) would determine home team for 2nd round. If not, then Power Points. If two teams from the same district meet in the regional final, then prior head-to-head would determine the home team.

If two teams from the same district meet in the regional round, then prior head-to-head would determine home team. If not, then OOD head-to-head (if possible) would determine home team. If not, then Power Points would determine home team.

Franklin county and Patrick Henry will always be an issue with the size and location. Definitely interesting as to a district they could be in within that Region.

Good point. That might be a situation for a hypothetical three five-team district and a one four-team district setup within the region as that region is the only one with 19 schools. That means you would only have two road games in district play within your district during the regular season; so two long trips. It allows for the flexibility to schedule elsewhere.

However, I will call myself out on this as my plan would call for OOD games to be played specifically against teams in your region. However, now I realize that might be totally full-proof and I would need to be flexible with that idea.

Even though a four-class setup is done. I might play around with this and make a five-class breakdown to see who would fall where.

I hope Gretna gets into your classification rather than the ones we have seen. With our dropping enrollment we could never compete at the higher group come playoff time. JMO.

My question with this, and I think it looks very good for the most part with the areas I really familiar with. But here is my question.

Take Class 2: You have East Rockingham in 1, but the other teams from their current district and former district in 2. So for the area I am most familiar with in Stuarts Draft, there is a school around 30 minutes away not in region, but Tunstall 2 and half hours. I realize there would be increased travel in a 4 class system, but that one doesn't see right.

And when you couple that with ER to Gate City (4 1/2 hours), whereas Tunstall is 3 1/2 hours to Gate City.

Just using those 4 schools that jumped out, may be more examples like that?
