Let me explain first the "Big 10 style!" I really could not come up with JUST 10 teams this week, so I am going to go with a 10A and a 10B. I figure I have to at least get the Evergreen leader in there somewhere, you know?
So, if the Big 10 actually should be called the Bigger 12, then I am going to add an extra team.
It's getting down to the nitty gritty and I we've got a lot of teams playing good baseball throughout Region II.
Here goes:
* Most, if not all, of the records are correct. If I am off by a win or a loss with some teams, sorry. Close enough, I say.
1. Monticello (Jefferson) 12-2, 6-1 ... As promised, a new number one out of the Jeffy has risen to the top.
2. Sherando (Northwestern) 16-1, 10-0 ... Warriors have not played since May 1 but they have two makeups the next few days and then will have off until next Monday. They can't wait until the week of May 27-31. Could be the most important few days in the program's history in nine years, if you catch my drift.
3. Powhatan (Jefferson) 10-6, 5-4 ... Defending region champs are gaining steam. Whipped up on previous No. 1 Western Albemarle last week by 12.
4. Potomac Falls (Dulles) 14-4, 12-2 ... Dulles leader has clinched the regular season, but losses to Woodgrove and Heritage over the last week have given the rest of the league hope for the district playoffs.
5. Briar Woods (Dulles) 10-5, 11-7 ... This week's first-time entry has made a super impression. Beat LV and Heritage over the last week. Miller's crew is playing good baseball.
6. Western Albemarle (Jefferson) 14-3, 6-2 ... Got to wonder what happened to the Warriors last week. They get blown out by Powhatan (need to not pitch to Allen next time, fellas) and were down 3-1 to Monticello when the heavens opened on Friday and suspended that game to sometime this week. Still good but not as feared.
7. Heritage (Dulles) 12-8, 11-5 ... The Pride have been smooth for the most part, but they fell to another team that is coming on strong in Briar Woods.
8. Woodgrove (Dulles) 11-4, 10-4 ... Blew out Pot Falls last week. Welcome back to respectability, Wolverines.
9. Millbrook (Northwestern) 10-9, 7-4 ... Young Pioneers, mixed in with a few seniors that have stepped up big this season, have them as a solid No. 2 in this league. Only Sherando has beaten Millbrook in the second half of the season.
10.A Loudoun Valley (Dulles) 12-7, 10-5 ... Vikings have had a little letdown of late, but they still have the potential to get rolling in the district playoffs.
10.B Liberty (Evergreen) 12-4, 6-1 ... Eagles have wrapped up the Evergreen and a home game for the Region II playoffs. That's all you need to know.
Some districts begin their playoffs later this week I believe. The Northwestern has changed its format, with the play-in now scheduled for Saturday and the two semifinals at 5 and 7:30 on Monday night at Bing Crosby Stadium in Front Royal. The final is still slated for Tuesday.
Have fun at the diamonds this week, folks!
