Newspaper Coverage

Seems like our local newspaper the Staunton Newsleader or Newsloser as some call it, is more interested in articles concerning Chilhowie than our local team Riverheads and maybe even Lee. In the last day or so there have been at least 3 articles online concerning Chilhowie and different topics on the team or coach. So much so that even a person from Chilhowie commented on the article page the following quote, "I am from Chilhowie. All I can say is, wow!. I wished our county paper had such articles. The Newsleader has a lot better articles about the Chilhowie Warriors than my local paper,,,, so sad". What's wrong with this picture? Where are the articles about Lees opponent Appomattox? Haven't seen a single article about them. Is there that big of a grudge against RH? I'm sure the Newsleader is hoping RH loses and LEE wins. Well maybe the Newsleader will get a new subscriber from Chilhowie.

Added note: Todays (12/8) print edition has the lead article about "Chilhowies goal is to win the day". Any article mentioning RH? NOPE

Nice article about Coach Casto and team in the Bristol Herald Courier today. 12/8
At least somebody writes about them.

Since the leader sucks , Everyone should read the Casto article in the Bristol paper . Very well done ! Sad we have to go that far to read something by real sports writer !

Are you so sure that the Leader actually wrote all these articles themselves or did they perhaps pick them up from Roanoke or some other paper? I don't personally know the answer...just asking.

Regardless, one thing I have picked up in general is that the town of Chilhowie, and apparently a couple of surrounding towns, have TOTALLY embraced this team. That kind of support can really impact a team, so even though I think most people expect RHS to win this one, they may need to bring their A game to do so. Sometimes games can be won on heart and emotion and if CHS has that much support behind them, anything could happen.

I dont get the newsleader and I dont read much online. I know the sports reporting has been wrong several times this year, with the many articles on situation after Riverheads and Lee game, being wrong about playoffs, and Lee playoff history. I dont remember any apologies or retraction, but I can't think they have some bias against Riverheads. I would assume this is quite rare for Chilhowie and residents around here don't know much about them. So the articles may help. It sounds like a great story as well.

I think people are trying to make an issue out of nothing. Thinking they are being slighted to create a narrative

If they are from another paper I don't see the credit given. The pictures used do give credit to someone else since they are pictures of Chilhowie. Two stories have Tom Jacobs listed and one has Patrick Hite listed from what I see. I think it's great that Chilhowie and others are rallying around the team. RH fans do the same. Some teams play forever and never get to a championship game. Maybe because RH has been there before it is taken for granted by the local media. Still haven't seen a single article in reference to Appomattox, Lees opponent. Chilhowie 3 Appomattox 0. Why Chilhowie and not Appomattox? I'm sure there has to be something to write about Appomattox considering they have won the 2A championship the last two years.

Definitely not trying to create a narrative. Not my style, but good try. Just a casual observation over the years that seems fairly obvious to people who pull for RH. Like you said concerning the RH-Lee issue, a little overkill with the number of articles about that. A severe error in judgement that didn't need to be in the paper everyday. Chilhowie is a good story but read the Bristol Herald Courier if you want to know about them. I want to hear about our local teams. RH will probably have more articles written about them if they lose then if they win.

It’s funny, because for people who don’t pull for the school from Greenville we usually feel the opposite about the paper and who it’s favoring.

I don’t read it much anymore though so i couldn’t tell you about it this year

The Riverheads/Lee incident was reported by a writer who thought it was an important issue and "shouldn't be swept under the rug." That was a slap to BOTH Robert E. Lee's and Riverheads administration in thinking they would not address the incident. As a matter of fact they both were dealing with it before this reporter broke it over social media.

As far a Chilhowie, it is great to see the community back and support their football teams. That is what high school football is all about. Not what the Newsfollower tries to report.
