As I was perusing through the new Rappahannock Times Sports pages, something rather odd caught my attention.

Why is Lancaster the #1 seed in boys basketball? This seeding gives them basically a lock into regions and states as well (look at my post on the tournament format below if you need an explanation).

The #2 seed Northumberland has to probably play Essex (both teams are in the State Top Ten) just for the right to make Regions. The loser is done for the season.

Both LHS and NHS finished with 8 wins and split in the regular season. Lancaster finished with a record of 8-1 in the NND. Northumberland finished with a record of 8-2.

Northumberland won 18 overall games (18-4) to LHS' 17 games (17-3).

Lancaster would not play Essex a 2nd time this past Friday night (was snowing some but NHS girls played a visiting Middlesex JV and Varsity games on that same Friday night). Okay, but Essex officials offered to play Lancaster the next day (Saturday) but LHS refused due to all weekend activities were.... cancelled.

I recall that Saturday was quite fine weather wise, maybe a tad cold outside. Snow was not called for until late Sunday. Maybe I am missing something here.

Interesting....Either play the game or maybe a coin toss is in order to decide this one.

Remember the seeding is based on overall record now. And one of Lancaster's losses was to a private school so it doesn't count in the divisor used to come up with their rating.

If a possible loss to Essex would not have impacted seeding at all, then it wouldn't matter if that game was played. If that is the case, then it makes sense not to play it. If the game could have changed the seeding, it should have been played if possible.

In the old days (a few years ago ha), that game could have made a big difference in the final tournament outcome (both teams with 8-2 records, having split the regular season games.)

Either way now, should be an exciting semi final battle with much at stake.
