Yes, the Gladiators came out on top in this one (24-3) but in all fairness to Luray, it was a closer game than it sounds as the Dogs were well on their way to tying the score on the opening drive of the second half before RHS stopped them on a crucial fourth down play. Also Riverheads played an uncharacteristically poor second quarter, recording two turnovers and committing three major penalties. We can debate all night long about how big an impact Dylan's absence was, but it was probably as important in terms of emotion and leadership as it was his athletic ability. So it was a shame he had to miss this one of all games, but he will still have his chance to shine in the playoffs.
After Luray deferred, RHS received a short opening kickoff and took five minutes off the clock for their first score of the night. However, the Dogs made them work for it as the Big Red had to convert two fourth-downs on the drive. Devin Morris scored from about 12 yards out on a nifty cutback move. Dependable sophomore Peyton Skillman booted the extra point to make it 7-0.
The Gladiators held the Dogs to a three and out on their first possession and Riverheads then moved ahead 10-0 on a 37 yard Skillman field goal very early in the second period. However the rest of that quarter was definitely NOT textbook Gladiator football and you could make a good argument that a healthy Jenkins might have taken better advantage of the situation than the Dogs were able to do.
First Riverheads tossed an interception around the Luray 35. No harm there as they quickly got the ball back. They then coughed up a fumble on their own side of the field and the visitors pounced on it. That fired up the Luray offense, especially Tristan Yowell, whose number was likely called upon a lot more than usual tonight. He had several nice runs on this drive, but in the end, the Gladiators kept them out of the end zone and Luray settled for a 38 yard field goal to trim the lead to 10-3. The Gladiators hurt themselves in that quarter as much as Luray did with a pair of holding penalties and a face mask call and they were lucky Luray was not able to further capitalize.
Due to deferring to open the game, Luray had the first chance in the second half and embarked upon the best Bulldog drive of the night. They took a short kick-off and drove down into the red zone, almost entirely on the ground, with the exception of a 15-yard pass play from Evan Hamilton to Yowell. Just when they appeared ready to punch it in to tie or even take the lead, the Gladiator D stiffened and stopped them on a 4th and 2 around the 17.
RHS then used up most of the rest of the third quarter on a lengthy drive to open up a two-score lead. Senior tailback Jackson Shover had the run of the night for the Big Red on a sweep around right end that carried for about 30 yards after a beautiful fake. He and Morris, who only weigh 275 pounds combined, were the Gladiator workhorses to that point of the game, but late in the third, fullback Dalton Jordan got into the act and churned out some tough yardage, including a 10 yarder to put RHS ahead 17-3. Luray never seriously threatened again and Jordan added the final TD on a two yard run midway through the fourth.
A Luray punt pinned RHS very deep late in the game and it looked as if the Dogs might be able to force or maybe even block a punt, but a personal foul penalty extended the drive and enabled the Big Red to run out the clock on a crucial district win. They are now 6-0 in district play and 7-0 overall, as they head into not one, but two challenging road games. They travel in to Staunton next week to tackle the high-scoring Leemen, and then on the 27th, make the long trip up to Woodstock to meet the undefeated Falcons who laid 77 on Madison County tonight. Time will tell but the Falcons just may be the pick of the litter in terms of all these Valley teams that will be crowding the 2-A playoffs.
Tough break for the Bulldogs tonight, but to look on the bright side, a stomach bug is a temporary thing, so they should quickly re-focus and set their sights on a 9-1 season. They showed us enough grit tonight to prove that they are quite capable of that as well as a deep playoff run.
