There is a lot of talk that because of how the championship game ended last year for Riverheads the pressure of redemption is being added to an already pressure filled title attempt. The Red Machine who is the overwhelming favorite has a ton riding on Saturday's game...especially with how people describe the Riverheads' faithful as a very "critical" group of fans when things dont go the way they believe it should. So how will they respond "if" the Great machine fails again? Little ole Sussex is just playing in attempt to beat the odds. Saturday's game will be another example of David vs Goliath. Where Riverheads is coming in with a Giant sized arsenal of weapons, the Tigers simply have a couple of sling shots, a few pebbles, and a bunch of faith trying to hit the big Giant in the right spot. A team that started out with 19 players is playing in a State championship game with nothing to lose. Tigers a #1 seed has been treated like a 5 or 6 seed all post season. Picked to lose every week by most. These young men will be playing with a chip on their shoulders...not just for a title but for a little bit of respect. They will also be playing to honor those Tigers who have gone on to watch the game with the big guy upstairs such as greats like Alonzo Goodwyn, Ben Smith, and Tyquan Johnson not to mention the voice at Tiger games for more years than I have lived...Mr. Eugene Roberts. These are just a few legends who have left us too soon but surely will be in our hearts Saturday(Tiger family anybody else you can remember please post it). The community in Sussex is tight and they will be there to support physically and in spirit. If the tornadoes that came in February couldn't break us then i'm not sure what else will. We like the underdog role...we thrive in scenarios like this. WE have NOTHING to lose. Riverhead is being picked to win this contest by a lopsided margin but...JUST BUT... what will be said if Riverheads loses another title? I hope to see a great battle...clean and fair. Im praying that each player, each family, each fan, each participant travels safely to and from this spectacular event without harm. May each eye wake to heaven smiling upon all of us and each heart satisfied. God Bless.

Nice Try , Nobody buying what you are selling either . Throw all the stats out the window . These two teams will show up, play their hearts out and one will win . Not sure how #2 is favored over undefeated #1 . Sussex is bigger , faster , more athletic and undefeated on the season . I am sure Riverheads will not be over confident on Saturday . Casto will not let that happen . Riverheads will " do what they do " and if the Tigers are better they will win . The kids that read this trash are not going to let it get in their heads . What you and I post is fun for us to pass the time till kickoff . Hope to meet you at the flagpole ! Go luck to both teams and may the best team win !

Saying someone is a huge underdog sounds like you are trying to soften the blow if your team gets steamrolled. I don't think that will happen. These 2 teams are here for a reason. They are both very good.

I couldnt help myself X...lol.

But you guys are the overwhelming favorites...that is still true...i saw 42-0...35-14...42-14. That machine of yours...man i tell you will be hard to stop...Nobody in VA outside of old region A is giving the tigers a shot.

To say NO PRESSURE ON SUSSEX is funny . The tigers are undefeated and you can bet these kids are going to do all they can to win this game . On the other side the revenge factor comes in .Riverheads does not what a repeat of last year . This should be a great contest !

8.5 And I take the Over. Might Need Captain Sig and the Northwestern on call in case the O line needs to drop some crab pots.
Those little guys wont be anything the great machine has to worry about.

Our original poster makes some good points. Sussex has nothing to lose if indeed Riverheads is such a big favorite, although I am not sure they are. You guys know me and how I like to compare scores, so we sat in Greenville the night they demolished Luray and we kept hearing those numbers raising higher. I think the final was 48-14, whereas we only beat the Dogs 37-0, so sounds pretty even to me.

Now you could also make a point about our romp over Galax last week and how that compares to Galax having beaten George Wythe, whereas Sussex just squeaked by GW, and so on and so forth. But these are all just numbers.

This game will start out 0-0 and I think it will come down to a case of which team gets the early breaks and how the coaches adjust to the flow of the game as it progresses. I for one am at least a little bit relieved about the weather. They are now saying that the winds will die down tomorrow and that it will be in the mid to upper 30s. So I don't see how that will be all that different from a routine Friday night game.

dtay16 , u must have us mixed up with gw !!! Our faithful don't go after a coach after a loss . If they loose it's because the better team won that day . As far as pressure I can say sat is just like any other game to them . They prepare for every team the same , heavy fav or underdog they don't overlook anybody !

I wouldn't say that. They just create a different type of problem
You've been awful quiet up until this State Game. Must be a front runner.

I wouldn't worry about those small guys crabbing. Gladiators have seen it plenty before. There is a lineage for that approach vs Casto's bunch. I haven't seen it work out too well for those teams. Seen others crab em on this same field. Points were plentiful that day. But if you are from Riverheads in 07, you probably didn't see that. I'll be there in person to watch this one.

The parents and fans of the riv program love to see the kids win just like every other teams fans do , so we take a loss just like everybody else . At the end of the day it's just a game , life goes on

No but I watched a game once. Come on man. Both teams know what's coming, for the most part anyway

When I played for Casto we did not make the playoffs . I can still see the same intensity in the eyes of the players today as back in the day . His style has not changed since way back. Maybe a little more laid back but still gets his team ready . The kids are on the field not the coaches , they determine what happens ! We won't go to the GW mess !

See you don't know anything. You are relying on the radio to tell you how they look? Might as well send you letter after the game so you can read about it later.

Longtimer is on here week in week out and watches them. You show up now and start talking now. Red 18 makes an account last week and starts talking. Xcross in insane. All this talk from people that don't know or only show up in December.

Sure it will be a good game. I just don't see their D line doing what Galax did in 2015.

I get what you are saying, even if you don't speak sarcasm.

What will the Sussex DL look like and do? 40 front?

Just because I don't reply all the time Tim doesn't mean I havnt been on here !! And no I didn't just start an account last week

I watch them play every week just like longtimer does , as a mater of fact sit close to him most of the time . So I can assure u I'm qualified to tell u that the kids are prepared and there will b no mutiny like gw !!!

Well If you played you should know better.

They will have 5 or even 6 guys up front with the middle guys trying to crawl around and trip up the linemen.

No use gettin on here flapping like the gw fans about how big , strong , fast , deep we are , everybody knows what u get when u play our kids . I don't just show up in December bud !!! As long as I have kids playing on the team I can damn sure tell u I know what I'm talking about !!!

Any questions about any quarter of any game this year Tim ? I'm sure I can give u an accurate answer seeing as how I'm there watching and not listening to the radio or relying on a worthless article from our worthless news paper !

Arent yall on the same side? I think it says he joined Dec 3, 2015 not 2016...2016 would definitely be last week.

It's all good ! Just lettin him know I didn't join this yr lol . And I can damn sure give an accurate statement about how parents will act or the pressure . As a parent and grad of riv I think I can say We all stand behind our coaching staff !!! Their record speaks for itself .

When you play for all the marbles the pressure is there believe me I know all about that,it will give you a dry mouth and a belly ache, but after the first hit it all goes away.Good luck to both teams.
