There is a lot of talk that because of how the championship game ended last year for Riverheads the pressure of redemption is being added to an already pressure filled title attempt. The Red Machine who is the overwhelming favorite has a ton riding on Saturday's game...especially with how people describe the Riverheads' faithful as a very "critical" group of fans when things dont go the way they believe it should. So how will they respond "if" the Great machine fails again? Little ole Sussex is just playing in attempt to beat the odds. Saturday's game will be another example of David vs Goliath. Where Riverheads is coming in with a Giant sized arsenal of weapons, the Tigers simply have a couple of sling shots, a few pebbles, and a bunch of faith trying to hit the big Giant in the right spot. A team that started out with 19 players is playing in a State championship game with nothing to lose. Tigers a #1 seed has been treated like a 5 or 6 seed all post season. Picked to lose every week by most. These young men will be playing with a chip on their shoulders...not just for a title but for a little bit of respect. They will also be playing to honor those Tigers who have gone on to watch the game with the big guy upstairs such as greats like Alonzo Goodwyn, Ben Smith, and Tyquan Johnson not to mention the voice at Tiger games for more years than I have lived...Mr. Eugene Roberts. These are just a few legends who have left us too soon but surely will be in our hearts Saturday(Tiger family anybody else you can remember please post it). The community in Sussex is tight and they will be there to support physically and in spirit. If the tornadoes that came in February couldn't break us then i'm not sure what else will. We like the underdog role...we thrive in scenarios like this. WE have NOTHING to lose. Riverhead is being picked to win this contest by a lopsided margin but...JUST BUT... what will be said if Riverheads loses another title? I hope to see a great battle...clean and fair. Im praying that each player, each family, each fan, each participant travels safely to and from this spectacular event without harm. May each eye wake to heaven smiling upon all of us and each heart satisfied. God Bless.
