Lake Taylor was number one by far but Salem did not come close to playing their best game . Lake Taylor had a lot to do with that. Coleman Fox was hurt and he was consistently our best player. Zach Hoyt got hurt during game . Salem was used to relying on big plays. They got a couple but turnovers and the big play before halftime turned the tide. Monacan the week before , had played better competition than Salem and were better prepared. All these factors contributed to Salem having a chance . Salem had a chance but had to play perfectly to win and they did not.Lake Taylor was a better team but Salem did not give its best performance . I think the team, players , and coaches were caught in the headlights sort of like a deer . Whether or not Salem was number two is a non factor for me . I was very impressed by the sportsmanship between the players . I thought Salem lost with class and Lake Taylor won with class , the players anyway. This game is played by high school players , not by coaches and fathers and fans . Lets keep it in perspective. I almost think there was a racial undertone to this game and that is sad to me that we have not rose above that. Having grown up on the west coast , there was not as much of this undertone because of the diversity already there . The South is still the best.
