NHS only up 14-12 with like 7 min in the 3rd quarter. Mathews played tough and NHS with countless, countless penalties.

Mason tosses 50 yard TD bomb.

Northumberland wins 64-12 with running clock for most of 4th.

Other positives 1st-

1) What an excellent pregame event tonight to honor Mr. Belfield who was the long time Voice of the Nation. Well done.

Great crowd. Looked like concessions were very busy. Even Superintendents and SB members were cooking for the community.

2) The NHS D was way improved. Looked good with like maybe 10 sacks. Athletes put in better spots.

3) NHS Kicker Harry Lee went 8 for 8 XPs until last one was blocked which he would have made. Also, many kickoffs went into endzone.

4) NHS has about 5-6 young athletes who can take it to the house at any time.

Things that must be improved to have a shot at the top 4.

The Good news is Coach Lewis and staff have fixed most issues as they come about.

Some turnovers tonight were foolish. Often it was kids just being careless with the ball.

The Penalties tonight were an embarrassment. It must be addressed. If a player continues to make the same mistakes, he must be removed.

Discipline and Discipline and Precision at Practice.

Some players seem to have a below average Football IQ. This can be corrected with study and they must pay attention at all times. They need also to read and understand the complexities of the game.

Now on the other hand many players are very young and some are new starters etc. so it does take time but understanding the game is vital to have a chance at the big 4.

NHS cannot just rely on Adams and the star players when NHS plays the top 4.

The good news is - it definitely can be done......and there is time.

Remember NHS had 0 scrimmages so not bad.

Overall, a good win after the 50 yard bomb.

Mathews showed their potential for 3 1/2 quarters. If they can put 4 quarters of defensive together like the first 3 1/2 they will be a tough out. They are a much improved team. The tidewater district has a sleeper in it.

Northumberland is a very good team. Coach Lewis is doing a great job with that program. He and Coach Kelly have their players believing in the both of them. Their kids are fighters.

Yes, the NHS players love their coaches and have bought in! I believe in them too! That’s my point - it can be done!

Mathews has improved greatly! Well done to their coaches, kids, and community. The numbers have increased. There is good talent and fight there as well. Who was that kid who had like a 90 yard TD sprint? Nice.

Dang, the game was within 2 in the third. NHS just has some amazing talent.

Good luck to Mathews as they continue to build back to glory.
