Not sure how I feel about this

As a fan of the game I am all for the best teams being in the playoffs to play to a true champion. However in light of the video being released from Phoebus recently it just speaks to fairness in the form of punishment. Today the VHSL adjudicated today 11/12/19 and placed the Phoebus Football team under a 1 year “warning” essentially a probation period, and the teams coaches and administration will meet with the players for chanting the N-word. Let’s not forget Poqouson High forfeited to York for chanting the same slur. Are these punishments similar, and is the same message sent to both schools about that word having no place in sports.

The Poquoson forfeit was decided by the school administration as they decided theIr racist video was unforgivable actions. I guess the Phoebus Administration feels somewhat differently.
Sorry about the auto correct typo in the first line.

While I commend the Poqouson Administration for their actions taken to ensure that a clear message was sent to its students, I don’t think the same can not be said for the VHSL or Phoebus Administration as both were way too lenient .

I can’t disagree with you. That was my initial thoughts also.

This whole thing is blown way of proportion. It's a simple chant and by the guidelines the most they would've got in school is detention. Have to get over it and realize that's how we talk over here. It's a time and a place for that kind of language and honestly getting hype before a football game is the perfect time. If they had social media to hear some of things Bill Dee used to say lol let's say Coach Dee would not have been around long. Let's go Phoebus! Use this as the chip on the shoulders we needed.

I hate to make the controversial(and double standard) remarks but although it is the same word(kind of). The context was used in two different ways which is why a predominantly black team using the word and a known "confederate" town using it are not the same. As a people(black man here), understanding that using that word only fuels "others" using it in a hateful manner; doesn't help much and you will pay the price.

Again, I'm sorry and by no means disputing the punishment but "i call a spade, a spade" and understand its a touchy subject. Some will say that's bulls*t but its no different than the white privilege argument...

I think the difference here was it might affect a playoff qualification versus a regular season game and it appears to be a chant by players in uniform hyping themselves up versus the Poquoson event involving a private party with a few players off site. I dislike forfeits for what improper talk 15-17 year olds may do.

As a black man here I can tell you that “that’s how we talk over here is a poor excuse. Growing up in Hopewell that’s how they kids y’all here too. The difference is the culture of a well coach program trying to change kids lives and grow men in Hopewell does not allow that kind of language to be on the field, even on a 90% black football team. Those kid would still be running and or forfeited because it’s not acceptable. “That’s how We talk doesn’t over here” doesn’t work on a job interview, doesn’t work on a college essay, and is not what a coach should allow of his team. Not to be holier than thou I’m just making the point it’s different ways to hype or impact the same kinds of kids.

That’s just pathetic! If that’s how y’all “get hype”,you need some help! Disgraceful!! I can promise you,my 99% black school doesn’t use that language, nor would the Black coach allow it. It’s degrading and belittling, and shows a lack of maturity! Maybe it’s just the type of coaching that lacks proper leadership qualities!

I can answer it like this. Everybody has an opinion and it may differ. It was a poor judgement by the kids especially after seeing the affect it had on the Poquoson/Yorktown community. The big difference is that the Phoebus kids didn't use the word to degrade another program or school as Poquoson did. They were calling themselves the slang version of the N word. Phoebus saying ," We got two hands my ni99as, We da P my ni99as" is different than Poquoson saying " We comin fo dem Ni99as" To me, that word should never be used in society period. This foolishness has to stop. I know I hear it maybe 30 times a day from either TV or radio. They need to remove it altogether. When I was a young kid I used the word countless times to my friends and didn't understand the full meaning of the word until I matured.
And yes there is a huge difference in a white community and black community using the word. If you don't believe me, go back watch that scene from the movie, Malibu's Most Wanted when Jamie Kennedy was rapping on stage in that club and used the word and he got tossed outta there lol. I'm sorry but that scene (of him getting tossed out) was hilarious. Seriously, this has to stop.

Yeah right put Hopewell in this situation and you would be on the same note not wanting a season ruined over a chant. And like I said there is a time and a place for that type of talk. We clearly would have no reason to show up to a job interview with that mentality of that type of language. And Coach Blunt has done an awesome job with cleaning up the program and not allowing that type of language. This was a pre game warmup with just players while the coaches were huddle up doing their pregame talks.

Coach was not near them at the time...it was clearly a player only chant. And if you think your "99% black school" doesn't talk like this then you're obviously out of the loop. Imagine us talking about kids 14-18 lacking maturity...I guess that's just not normal huh?

I guess you don’t know about Hopewell then, a few years ago when we took a spanking from Staunton River in the state semi finals. The night before the game, Coach Irby sent home 8 starters called their parents and had them come pick them up from the hotel In the middle of the night and take them home. And that wasn’t the first time Hopewell has had to do something like that. Did they make a bad choice yes but UNDISCIPLINED BOYS become
UNDISCIPLINED MEN. That may be ok in Phoebus but if you ever hear our coach talk about his program the first thing he says is that his job is to grow them into fathers, husbands, and productive members of society. That’s just my perspective and yours is different, and I guess I have to respect that. Just know when the come to Merner, IF they come to Merner they will need a whole lot more than that a N-word chant and a chip on their shoulder to beat these Blue Devils.

I admire Coach Irby. He's done a superb job with the Blue Devils program. So has Coach Blunt at Phoebus. What y'all don't know is, this man put his neck out on the line and suspended himself (even tho he wasn't aware of the chant and video) for this week's game. Coach Blunt has had no issues with violations until now. Once VHSL sanctioned the program, the school staff stated that it wasn't necessary for Blunt to suspend himself and that this should be a learning lesson for the kids. Also I'll promise you this, Phoebus won't be afraid to go to Merner or anywhere else. They know who Trey and company are and aren't at all intimidated in the least. Y'all better get ready for more than likely Lafayette.

Come on @HooSprings I've made it clear I want to see ya boys succeed but don't tell me Springer boys don't use the same language in the same context. Maybe not chanting it but nevertheless the same.

You want to ask if anyone was suspended for a game after that?! I can assure you...THEY WERE! He’s raising men that will contribute to society without using derogatory language like this, not just football players. I’m well aware of this video, and any team with integrity would take the same steps!

Again, no crime was committed in either instance. From my perspective, Phoebus got it right, and Poquoson, not to mentioned some of the posts, completely overreacted & got it WRONG. Those kids should not have been given the death penalty, I.e. gone for the season. Regardless, I’ll still be rooting for both.

And the programs were punished for it.
Like PHSBlue&Gold mentioned -The schools have already taken action regarding this incident. If any of you have a life, please move on. Sometimes kids do questionable things. On to York next week. They will get their wish to play the Phantoms. Let see what happens in Yorktown.
