This happened twice in the Hylton/Colonial Forge game tonight (happened to each team). Offense would run a play, stay in bounds, get a penalty called after the clock hits 0:00, loses yards and gets an extra play? I thought it was only defensive penalties that allow for the offense to get an extra after a quarter expired.

An extension of period applies to an accepted penalty whether on the offense or defense if time expires during the down. The only way a period is not extended for an untimed down is if the penalty carries a loss of down, the penalty results in a safety, a foul that is chosen to be enforced on the kickoff, or nonplayer and unsportsmanlike fouls.

Thanks - that would explain what I saw last night. It is just rare to see an offensive penalty after time expired in a quarter.

The reason why the talking heads on television say it's only extended for defensive penalties is because they are talking about the end of half. If there is a foul on the last play of either half, then the offense would accept one of the defense because it would give them a chance to score (unless they're just killing the clock). A foul by the offense on the last play would be declined because the defense would be happier to end the half and not offer up one more chance to score.

Obviously, if the offense scored on that last play but was flagged, the defense would absolutely accept that penalty and make them replay the down after the half ends.

Also, time has to expire during the play. Previously, an untimed down was played if the foul occurred during the last down of the period. It did not have to expire during the down. So if the foul occurred during the play, time was still on the clock but the clock was won=und and time then expired, an untimed down was required.

Now, the clock must expire during the down.
