George Wythe Lady Maroons Basketball Team
Honaker -37 and Holston -17 back to back then Rural Retreat, to compete in 1A at that level I feel an embarrassment for everyone involved with GW whether you are a player, fan, parent, coach, or faculty.
If you are not a Maroon, it is hard to understand what a Maroon even is., We are Maroons, where our color is our name, Maroons are elite, Maroons are feared, Maroons are winners, Maroons are proud, Maroons are respected, Maroons have heart, Maroons always fight, Maroons never quit, Maroons are the standard.
When you lose to anyone by 37 points, then turn around and lose to Holston by 17 points in basketball, you as the coach don’t understand what it is to be a Maroon. You follow that up by completely choking at Rural Retreat tonight with Galax, C-burg, and Radford coming up.
As a coach there is no excuse for not having the team ready to play after losing three in a row, then go to RR up 21-5 after the 1st quarter and lose 43-42.
A coaching change would be understandable now, maybe it is more than you thought it was going to be, they have not gotten better that is for sure. Maybe it is time to do the right thing, letting someone else get these girls going because you cannot do it, going 1-18 won’t be purrrdy by any means. And how can you win if you don’t get what you are doing will never work.
The talent is there as always, we are Maroons, kids are raised here to be talented, talent for this team is not an issue. I have played around these girls at the local rec. and Ingo, Miller, and any three freshmen can compete against any team in 1A.
I know the rest of Virginia is saying, “here we again”, but these coaches we have are good people, they care, but there is something missing they can’t coach.
Imo GW needs to hire coaches that are with-in the Maroon family, and at least ONE FEMALE coach would be nice.
After all these girls have given to be the first team to ever lose to a not very good 0-4 Holston team, then choking in RR tonight is well below Maroon standards, we as MAROONS demand better!
