Is there any rule against PA announcers "calling out plays as they are being run" ?

Is there any rule against clock operators also doing the PA ?

No ONE person can operate a football scoreboard and do PA as well. Now, I'm speaking of a board that has down, distance, and yard to gain to keep up with as well as starting/stopping the clock properly, and a PA guy that needs to work in necessary info at the same time, like who made the tackle, etc. If there is a play clock involved, a seperate person is needed even for that too, in addition to spotters for assisting with this info in a timelty manner. As far as "calling out plays", I don't know if there is a rule against it, although I have heard of refs throwing out the PA guy when he made a negative comment over the mic about the officiating!

There is a rule against PA announcers talking while the play is being run, but it's a VHSL rule and not a NFHS rule, so it's not in the Rules Book and most officials don't know about it. I hate it when those guys do that so I looked it up in the VHSL handbook and, sure enough, it's there.

There is not a specific penalty but I put the kibosh on it whenever it happens. The reasoning? Well, it's annoying as heck, but the real reason is I don't want to have to listen to what they say to make sure they aren't giving an advantage to the home team. About 20 years ago, there was a school in the association I was in at the time that allowed their PA guy to do this and on one play, the opposing QB runs a great play fake. Over the PA you hear "IT'S A PASS!!!!" Flags flew all over the field.

I also had a play one night where some yokel was on there with limited play by play, but not too bad until the end of the half. His team was inside the 20 and ran a sweep to the far sideline, so this play happened every bit of 75 yards away from him. The tackler reaches high and gets a hand inside the shoulder pad but below the facemask and pulls the runner down. Over the PA I hear, "[kid's name] around the end, he crosses the 15. There's a facemask. THERE'S NO FLAG. THEY'RE NOT CALLING THAT FACEMASK. ARE YOU KIDDING THEY'RE NOT CALLING THAT FACEMASK." I didn't penalize the team but I did shut off the PA.

As for a rule about the PA guy keeping the clock, there is no rule but common sense has to prevail, you would think.

Giles County PA announcer

Thanks for the input.

I think the VHSL should require every PA announcer in the state to attend a Giles County game and listen to their PA announcer, before they are allowed to call another game at their respective school. the guy at Giles is the best I have ever heard. He calls game as it should be called.
VHSL needs to eliminate "homers".

Re: Giles County PA announcer

The Giles PA announcer has been a HS basketball official for years. He tries very hard to get it right and makes a concerted effort to show respect for the visiting team and their fans which is the way it should be. We have one person who operates the scoreboard and another whose sole job is to run the clock. The 25 second clock is operated remotely by one of the officials on the field.

Giles is the only on campus high school game I have ever been to that had the feel of a college game.

(and one can walk to McDonalds from the parking lot)

Re: Giles County PA announcer

What college would that be? Bridgewater, Ferrum?? As much as you claim to get around and as many games all over the state you say you've attended...you must truly be concussed and need to sit out a week. That McDonalds coffee has had an adverse effect. Giles IS a great atmosphere, but not the only one.

I will say this about Giles

When I started officiating I was still an undergrad at Tech. My association back then covered Giles and I've had games there.

If you are a football fan -- not the root-only-for-your-team-or-stay-home fan, but a true fan of high school football who likes to go experience it in all its glory and see as many different things as possible, you MUST treat yourself to an early season game at Giles that starts before sunset. When the sun sets over the mountain to the west, with young men playing football on the field, it is truly an awesome sight.

Maybe someone has a picture. I've always wanted one.

I remember being there, looking at that, and thinking if National Geographic wanted to do an issue on a portrait of America, that could be the cover shot.

Re: I will say this about Giles

I went to one game at Giles Co. Playoff game in November and it was 20 degrees and wind blowing like crazy with snow flurries. Might be a great place, but not that day.

I'm trying to think of a place where it would be nice being at a game on a day when it's 20 degrees and windy, but nothing comes to mind.

Re: I will say this about Giles

A dome perhaps, that's about all I can think of. Speaking of which with high school stadiums getting bigger and more expensive (at least in some states) how long before we see a high school with an on campus dome stadium.

Re: I will say this about Giles

With all the budget cuts going on,the high schools,Texas not included.,might be back to playing in the cow pastures.
