I think saying "walked off the field" and "threw in the towel" are some harsh statements. The decision was made for the safety of the players. Covington suffered some injuries and ended up having seriously low numbers and the coaches decided that it was not safe for the remaining players to continue. Keep in mind, that even if a team still has more than 11, it is not always safe to play because some of your bench players could be kids that are allowed on the team, but coaches know they would be in danger if they were in a game. Also, if kids have to move seriously out of position and do not have the skill set or practice time in at a position, that also becomes dangerous. Don't think that the decision was made lightly, every . No coach and most players do not like having to stop playing and many argued against it and by making those types of comments you make it sound like Covington said "hey guys, this isn't going our way, lets just up and quit and walk off the field." That is taking something away from those who are gamers and put in the hours and played hard. Many programs are facing seriously low numbers.
I get what you're saying and my comments were not a knock on the players at Covington at all. But there is definitely a noticeable pattern with them going back to last spring and that falls on the coach. I doubt the players like this pattern either.
Regardless, it's an old school rivalry that will sorely be missed in years to come. Covington historically always brought their A game vs the Blues and you could always circle that game as a big deal. I hope Alleghany and Covington are able to get things straightened out and bring pride back to those communities soon.
