Phillip Fleshman

Ben Cates does a great job with his articles. He always shows Appomattox love.

Phillip is a great kid on and off the field. I know him very well and he is a lovable kid. He always speaks to you. He tells me he loves me every time I hug him. He loves his community, teammates, and coaches. I cant wait to see what he does at the next level. I know UVA wise been looking at him hard. There are others in the mix. I truly think Phillip would have been a 2000 yard rusher 2 seasons in a row if we didnt "spread the love" around in backfield (not saying there is something wrong with that). Coach Smith has done a great job at sharing snaps between Phil and Tre Walker, but with Tre down, phil has exploded in post season.

Gotta spread the snaps around to keep the defense honest. Of course with my limited knowledge of football that is the only logical conclusion to jumps to the front for me. Additionally I don't think coach smith looks to boost any players stats beyond getting done what needs to be done to win.

That is one of the things I am most proud about in the 2015 & 2016 APPO teams. The players have understood and never complained about individual stat or awards or the lack thereof.
They know that "Team" always comes before "Self ". While I try not to look at the individual awards, last years All-State team only had (2) Appomattox kids who were first team and Zero (0) kids on second team. If you look at how many players were represented on the list from the same teams and Appo only had (2) ? That was the biggest rip-off ever . If you look at the season we had and we only had 2 kids get on it....that was a joke but I know it all starts with the district voting then region then state;regardless the system is messed up. I know however that this is a subject for a different time.

Anyway great article on Phillip !

That is so true!!!
Clarke County having like 12 on 1st and 2nd team was pitiful. We only had 2? Coach Smith told me he had to fight just to get them on. No disrespect to CC, but it was just wrong.

In the local newspaper, at the end of the season, they had our stats in there. Top 10 in rushing, receiving, and passing. We only had one player in there and that was our QB at #7. Yep, so I agree, individual awards are overrated. What Appomattox has done in past 2 years is truly the POWER OF ONE! Our kids are humble and they dont get caught up in the 'ME stats.'

One other thing about Phillip. He is 5'8" 175, I can only imagine how many D1 colleges would be beating down his door if he was 6'+ and 215+ with the barry sanders cuts he can make. I been watching this kid make them cuts since little league. He is fun to watch.

No disrepect to CC but when awards go to that many from the same team and they got beat and got beat soundly. That only shows that ind stats don't mean alot. If you were playing in the back yard and picking teams from the final 4 teams, your team would have been full of Raiders as they were dominating players from top to bottom. When it is all said and done Appo will have a number of kids that moved on and played college from that team. That says alot more than any stats.

Agree whole heartedly with you on this one. That's why "teams" win titles in football and not individuals. Big stats look great, but to me to have back to back team titles is far greater than any individual award could ever be and something that memory wise will last a lifetime.

Here is Phillip's Highlights from season. Cant wait to see him on the next level. I would post more highlights of others, but I know how some parents get mad about me praising their kids publicly. Who knew? lol

Me too, I been watching him since he been knee high, lol. I would show up early for my sons games just to watch him. He had this shiftiness and hard nose running back then too. Everyone knew he was going to be special when he got to Varsity.
