The 1000-yard plateau is a goal most running backs at all levels strive to achieve. Phoebus halfback Colby
Goodwyn
has 1054 yards with three games to go and he is leading the Peninsula
District in rushing yards. Already the holder of two state championship
rings, you have to wonder if winning the District rushing title would hold any significance with
Goodwyn.

"Oh yea that's real big for me knowing how the
running back tradition is carried at Phoebus," Goodwyn said. "For me to go down
as the leading rusher is just showing the good breed of running backs Phoebus
has. Our line has been blocking great and there's no reason I can't finish on
top."

Goodwyn (5-foot-10, 195) hopes to
follow in the footsteps of Shawne Alston (West Virginia), Dennis Mathis
(Hampton), and Haroom Brown (Maryland) as recent Phoebus running backs who went
on to play D-1 football. An elusive runner with moves to match Reggie Bush,
Colby feels he brings a lot to the table for any school wanting to recruit
him.

"I feel I can offer a school a great off-tackle
runner because I feel I have great field vision especially for zone
blocking," he said. "I try to avoid as many hits as possible with my speed but
don't get me wrongI'm definitely a physical back considering how
much stronger I've gotten. I feel my blocking is very good and my receiving
skills are good especially on screens."

A standout at both safety and
cornerback, Goodwyn has been contacted by several schools including
North Carolina, East Carolina, Boston College, and Virginia. Goodwyn but
one school really caught his attention when he went to a camp during the
summer."I really liked North Carolina," Goodwyn said. "I just love their
campus, their facilities, and the atmosphere down there. Plus, their
offense most definitely fits my style of running."

This Friday, the annual Hampton-Phoebus rivalry takes place at
Darling Stadium in Hampton (Va). Although Coach Bill Dee moved on
after building Phoebus to the #1 program of the decade, the rivalry hasn't
lost any intensity, and it's still the biggest game in the Eastern Region. "This
game is still big for us even though we lost Coach Dee," Goodwyn explained.
"This is just one rivalry you just can't take for granted. I just talked to
Shawne last night and he was just telling me what I have to do to get
things done for this game."
