Late in the Salem Lt game Lake Taylor attempted an onside kick. Salem recovered the ball but Lake Taylor was called offside. The officials penalized Lake Taylor 5 yards and they.got to try another onside kick. If the officials made the correct ruling this is a terrible rule. This actually encourages the kicking team to be offside. The receiving team should have the option of taking the ball where it was recovered.

From what I understand that is the rule but I stop short of stating it encourages offsides by kicking team because what if they recovered the ball but I think Salem or the receiving team should have the option of declining so I get your point. Good call.

I would also like to know why a holding call on a touchdown reception was added to the next kick off? It’s not a dead ball foul , so you either take the penalty and replay the down or you decline it. I’ve never seen a holding penalty added to the next kick off

Bad rule. Should be changed on kickoff.
It's definitely a bad rule but it is consistent with the flow of the game. The team that is in possession of the ball in considered the offense and it's a dead ball if the offense advances past the line of scrimmage before the ball is in play.

Don't agree that it is in the flow of the game. Lake Taylor got to try three onside kicks. They did not recover any of them.

I'm not saying that onside kicks are in the flow of the game. I'm saying the rule is consistent with other similar situations in the game.

FWIW the rule applies to both sides of the ball. If the receiving team was off side the ball is also dead. So if something good happens for the kicking team and the receiving team is offside again there was no kick period. Ball is dead.
