Power points issue

I would like to hear thoughts from those who are active on this board.

Park View (3A) and Brunswick (2A) did not play their scheduled game a few weeks back. Apparently it had something to do with a threat on social media. Rather than reschedule and play the game on another date, the game was cancelled. Both teams will play 9 games.

Sussex is slightly behind Essex in power points because Sussex did not get the points from that game which were inevitable since Sussex beat both Park View and Brunswick. That game cancellation could ultimately have significant ramifications in deciding the top seed in Region A.

Shouldn’t the VHSL either force a decision on that game or simply award the points to which Sussex is entitled?

Even though I don't reside down that way any longer I believe the threats can be handled with a day time game with heavy security. Either way Sussex should be awarded the points because they beat both teams.

Sussex should get the points if a decision is not made. All scenarios were given to play the game like you said day, heavy security, and even no spectators. Brunswick does not want to play the game from sources from their camp. They were given an opportunity this past Monday to play. The student who made the threats was from Brunswick and has been apprehended. Hopefully a decision will be made soon by the VHSL.

Brunswick will have to forfeit. Record should show a 2-0 Park View victory, and points should be awarded accordingly. Unless Park View agreed to a double forfeit

If both teams agreed to cancel, as long as all other rules are met, then the points will divided by 9 for the avgerage instead of ten. Could end helping both teams.

VHSL Handbook, page 133, 63-3-2

"Games that are not concluded by that date, (the Tuesday preceding the first Regional play-off date), will be counted as a loss by both teams."

Also under that same rule:
"A team may choose to forfeit only if approved by the VHSL Executive Director."

There is no provision for a "double forfeit".

Page 113, 54-7-1. Covers double forfeit, which if both teams agreed to cancel and not make up the game, would be the case I would think. I was under the impression PV wanted to play but Brunswick would not

Yes sir, you are correct, and I stand corrected. As far as I know that is the only reference to a "double forfeiture" in the Handbook. But the end result is the same, counted as a loss for both teams.

I believe the original decision to not make up the game officially is made by the Director of the Tri-Rivers District? (Assuming the two schools can not agree). Ultimately the Executive Director must declare a forfeiture, even it decided as a double forfeiture.

Personally, I have a little trouble with allowing Brunswick, (and all of Park Views opponents), benefitting points wise from the unfortunate circumstances that occurred.

Without inside knowledge of the exact circumstances of the threat, it's hard to criticize Park View for erring on the side of caution. Even if it was made up on Saturday, or Monday evening, with the threat still being fresh on everybody's minds, almost anything could have set off mass panic in the stands. And then what?

Tough call for all involved.

If both schools agreed to cancel, then both schools will take a loss, unless they make it up.I would assume points would be awarded accordingly. As was mentioned earlier, it will take an excutive decision to further the process

@DinwiddieProud so what does that mean for the teams that beat both teams? Those teams get 1 or 2 bonus points?
The teams that recorded a win over PV and/or Brunswick get no points for that cancelled/forfeited/whatever game, because neither team was credited with a win.

The rule says: 2 points for each win by a defeated team.
1 point for each win by a non-defeated team.

So, if the team they played doesn't get the win, there are no points allotted.

The key to it is, you want the teams you played to win. If you have beaten them you get twice as many points, 2, for each of their victories. If you lost to them, you get only one point for each of their victories. If they lose, it doesn't matter if you beat them or not, you get nothing.

LOL, kind of puts you in a pickle when you have to root for your arch rival to win games!

I know this post is about points, but lets looks at the underlying issue here? Aren't these the same two schools that had a brawl that ended Park Views Basketball season? Sounds like this should be addressed prior to season starts and in the student athlete handbook with the consequences
