Thomas Dale
Monacan
Bird
Varina
Hopewell
Lee Davis

HM: Deep Run, Atlee, Cosby
Note: HSHS will be young, but loaded with talent...I wouldn't underestimate them... You will see the "beginning" of the next 3-4 year period of what will be a serious contender to the Class 5 Championship!

@springer76 everybody knows better than to underestimate HSHS. That shows how good your program has become... the fact that HSHS is not numb 1 preseason in a absolutely loaded richmond area is "doubting them". When I do my ranking I look at "Are you better than last year" with every team in the region. The fact that HSHS was incredible last year, so many starters graduated, and has to break in a new QB holds me back from a preseason number 1. I have no doubt the talent is there. I think Hermitage, TD, and Manchester are all going to be stronger this year than last. I think Bird, Dinwiddie, & HSHS are slightly down.

I think Monacan and Varina are better this year but it is not enough for either of them to be in my preseason top 5.

I am surprised to see Cosby on your HM list over Freeman and Motoaca. I think Motoaca beats Hopewell in Central district play so I didn't have Hopewell in my top 10.

I will weigh in tomorrow after getting a look at Varina and what we look like against them.
It is interesting that this year of the 17 teams on both your lists have new QBs. If I am not mistaken, every team except Bird, Monacan, Varina, Lee Davis, Hopewell, Atlee, and Deep Run (not sure about Benedictine or Matoaca). That may or may not lead to more parity (more losses by the top tier teams) than in recent years. It might make me favor a team like a Fludd led Monacan team over a Thomas Dale, Dinwiddie. I won't be surprised if teams lose an extra game this year because of it. Of course QB play is affected by O line play as well as receiver play. There was a lot of really good talent that graduated last year from this area. Can this year's crop step up to replace them?

Thanks for the HM.
We will see if we can fill the holes from last year and take that step forward.

I would love if that ends up being the case for Monacan. It is show and prove time for us. it kind of has to happen now. QB's like Fludd do not grow on trees.

I have to tell you. HS's last years JV qb, D'Vonte Waller is VERY good. David Laney is Very good too! Hell of a competition between the 2. We are blessed with 2 excellent qbs!
Waller a Jr. Laney a Soph.

I don't know if he has as much talent around him as the past 3 years, but every team in their way has question marks also. He is a heck of a player and I am sure he knows it is his time shine.

If I'm not mistaken, you guys have a large returning group. You all are supposed to be better, right!

We do. We also had holes from last year to fill. We added some new players and had a good group move up from JV to go with this senior class. Like everybody else we have to avoid penalties and mental mistakes, but not getting behind the chains will be important to our offense. I'm excited to see us get after it in pads against a couple of top 10 area teams.

Not doubting either of them and that competition might be the x factor in HS favor. The Herm QB played pretty well against Bird last year too, but at this point I would rather face him than Winborn. Obviously stout defenses can really help a QB that hasn't found his groove. I just think a lot of these matchups could be close contests and experience might carry the day.

If you could tell me for sure that we will not have 3 turnovers in the first halves or our first two games this year unlike last year, I would be ecstatic. That would make a big difference in the start of our season.

DSH, have you been drinking the Dinwiddie Pride Kool Aid again? You are right, one game at a time. Got to fix a few things, but I am feeling a bit encouraged by our improvement since Monday's scrimmage. We still have work to do, but the running game looked really special last night. Getting a win at Salem will be no easy task. Let's not give them any reason to play the underdog role. They are the two time defending champs for a reason and not many walk out of their stadium with a win. The Highland Springs vs. Hermitage game could shake things up in a hurry. By week four this list will be a mess.

My top ten

1. Manchester
2. HSHS
3. Hermitage (To be the man you got to beat the man)
4. Dale
5. Dinwiddie
6. Monacan (Will they be the man in 4a? Have the talent to do it)
7. LC Bird
8. Varina
9. Patrick Henry - Ashland (Don't sleep on the Patriots)
10. Henrico

Global warming, rising sea-levels, Dinwiddie - playing power football
What is next?

I think Dinwiddie just happens to have enough talent to be good at almost any offense. If they are going to be even more "well balanced" this year that doesn't bode well for the rest of the region.

1. Highland Springs (Still wearing last year's crown until somebody knocks it off)
2. Herm (based on their D)
3. Monacan (Fludd)
4. Dinwiddie
5. Manchester
6. Varina
7. Bird
8. Dale (Have to beat LCB in the Battle before you can be higher. Too 1 dimensional?)
9. Lee Davis
10. Deep Run (Homer vote, but if we can put it together....)

HM: Patrick Henry, Hopewell, Meadowbrook (Brutal schedule again, but they think they can shock some people)

Sadly it looks like Dinwiddie, Monacan, PH and Louisa. DP mentioned yesterday that Hanover only dressed out 22 against Herm. OUCH!

Well if we are going by gut, here is mine...

Hermitage
Manchester
Thomas Dale
Dinwiddie
Highland Springs
LC Bird
Monacan
Varina
Lee-Davis
Hopewell

Not much variation from my first one, just a couple spots changed hands.

I know one coach at Dale that was computing what they need to happen to get the #1 seed in Class 6. That was 3 weeks ago. He will not like my ranking of them.

I have real concern about any coach computing what it takes to achieve a ranking. At least until the end of the season and their fate depends on games out of their control.

Did any of you see Hermitage scrimmage Hankver yesterday? I did....
First glaring thing I saw was Hanover only had 22 or 23 players dressed for varsity.( they did have a jv team too).
Secondly, in the first qtr (scrimmage was done game style) Herm scored 3 times. They moved the ball effectively scoring quickly. They had a pick 6 + kick, then recovered a fumble deepthen scored quickly to take a quick 21-0 lead. 2nd qtr. the offense moved the ball inconsistantly and scored 1 more time.
Then Herm's offense went ice cold.....
Final score 28-0
I didn't see the 2nd half, I left..... I really wasn't impressed! We'll see how they do Friday!

Springers how do you think next week will play out?

It's really kind of hard to tell. I do realize that what I saw at Herm Thursday was a scrimmage. If I based it on what I saw out of them then, we'd beat the snot out of them! BUT.... In reality, I don't expect that to happen!! I think it's going to be a hard fought battle like all the other battles we've had with Hermitage!!
They have a great defense. We have a really good defense
We have the makings of a great offense. They have potential to be good!
That being said, the defenses cancel themselves out.
HS has more offense and wins 21-14 again.
