Preseason Region A games of the Week.

I'm sure some of these might change as the season goes on but here is one guy's take on the best matchups in the region
Week 0: 3A Spotsylvannia vs. Colonial Beach. David vs. Goliath. Really intriguing since Goliath's coach used to coach David.
Runner up: Sussex Central vs. Essex. Rematch of two top teams from last year. But graduations have changed the Tiger's roster. Don't count them out yet.

Week 1: King & Queen Central @ Blessed Sacrament. Nope you didn't hear me wrong. This represents the best chance for a Royal Tiger victory all season and should be a good game.
Runner up: Franklin @ Essex. 2 of the top teams do battle which might be the first of 2 matchups. Yes this is a boring week in Region A football.

Week 2: Essex @ 2A King William. Always a great match up but Essex normally comes out on top.
Runner Up: Colonial Beach @ Franklin. Great match up different styles. They both run the ball. CB with the deceptive Shotgun Wing and Franklin with the no secrets Power I. First one to pass the ball 5 times will be the loser.

Week 3: Colonial Beach @ Sussex. The Drifters head down 95 South back to back weeks. By this time the young Tigers might be hitting their stride
Runner Up Washington & Lee @ Rappahannock. The first of 2 matchups between the 2. It was the runner up because frankly all the other games were terrible

Week 4: Middlesex @ Northumberland. They normally play close games.
Runner Up 2A King William @ Washington & Lee. Normally a matchup of 2 of the better passing offenses in Region A

Week 5: Prvt. Christchurch @ Northumberland. Should be a quality matchup against one of the top smaller private schools
Runner Up West Point @ Colonial Beach. 2 small towns, 2 small schools with small rosters

Week 6: Northumberland @ Essex. Can they finally get over the hump?
Runner up: 3A Park View SH @ Sussex Central. Could mean alot if they can get wins over 2A and 3A opponents

Week 7: Rivalry Weekend Part I. Colonial Beach @ Essex. The 2 top teams in the Neck do battle. Sorry Northumberland.
Runner up: Washington & Lee @ Northumberland. The next 2 in the Neck. Hey the NN is strong
Runner Runner up: Sussex Central @ Franklin. No secret these 2 don't like each other on the field

Week 8: Tie Colonial Beach @ Northumberland OR the rematch Rappahannock @ Washington & Lee. Did I mention how strong the NN is from top to bottom

Week 9: Washington & Lee @ Essex. Normally a tough district match up
Runner Up Sussex @ 2A Greensville. A win over their neighbors could mean a boost in points

Week 10: Rivalry Weekend Part II.
3 way tie Franklin @ 3A Southampton; Surry @ Sussex Central and Washington & Lee @ Colonial Beach. Every match up with have some playoff inplacations in these matchups between rivals either in the same county or schools so close they share damn near everything

I've got to root for those kids at K&Q. Especially after last season. But, I'm thinking a 63-21 loss. Sorry.
I see MaxPreps is showing 27 on the roster for this year. That's encouraging.

Which game was it last year that ended so ugly? Charles City and somebody, correct?

I would add Essex vs 3A Thomas Jefferson, who made a little run in playoffs last year. This will be the biggest test for Essex in regular season aside from Sussex week 1.

I'd be highly suspicious of K&Q's roster on Maxpreps. I mean it still lists their coach as N/A. Heck, Essex on Maxpreps still shows John Fulks as the coach and lists Adarious Jones on the roster despite the fact he has not played for them since 2016.

LOL, yes sir, I take everything from MaxPreps with a LARGE grain of salt.

I reached out to MaxPreps a couple of times bringing their attention to an error, not unlike what you said. Never a return reply. I guess accuracy is not one of their priorities.

I think VHSL Reference does a good job with respect to accuracy. I've seen a what I though were a few errors over the years, but typically, they do a good job. Sometimes they get criticized for their rankings, but those that are critical forget that everything they produce is purely statistical.

Back to the subject, I assume you think their roster will be somewhat smaller? Is it simply a result of numbers? Just not very many male students of "football" age passing through at this point in time?

I don't think TJ will be able to repeat last years run but they still have some talent. But Essex will have to play at TJ & outside of Colonial Beach & Sussex I believe this is by far the biggest test for the boys from Tappahannock.
